Right. There's really no need to justify the thought-provoking parts of an interview with a neo-Nazi child molester who also writes about UFOs.
It's not like this guy was the only guy of any value they could talk to so they had to look past his record or brought his past up on the interview with him.
They didn't look into his background, they got burned. It happens! Admit you didn't screen as well as you could have, apologize, pull the episode (well, I would pull it - others may disagree), be more careful in the future.
Remarkably it looks like this is a case where Gene can admit they made a mistake, but deep thinker J. Randall Murphy can't let it go at that. The guy can find an opportunity to talk down to people even under these circumstances.
