I was just going through some of my photos from the past year. It was a good year, but the photos from Thula Thula in South Africa will always be special. Long before making the trip, we read The Elephant Whisperer (Lawrence Anthony) about the bond that he formed with the wild elephants he protected on his land. When he died the elephants came and held vigil at his house. The next year, they returned . . .

Our first afternoon there, someone said to turn around. There was Nana, the matriarch of the story, checking me out. Sniffing me. We saw many other animals there and elsewhere. But these elephants were the reasons we made the trip,
