The traditional usage of substances like ayahuasca was restricted to the local shaman and other people who had carefully prepared for the journey, and there are unquestionably some extremely excellent reasons for this. The work of Terence McKenna is highly intriguing in this regard. It was fascinating and occasionally terrifying enough for me to explore with altered states on my own without using any medications. I eventually started drinking, if I'm being completely honest, more to blend in with my peers than anything else.
