According to most paranormal theorists, a residual haunting occurs when some traumatic past event leaves an 'impression' that can be perceived or a 'recording' that can be played back. Residual hauntings generally do not allow for interaction between the specter and the spectator. There is no or limited awareness of the specter toward the spectator. This is because, so the theory goes, the specter is either just pure emotion 'impressed' upon the environment or only a fragment of the specter's self is present. Now, this sounds good but then so does a hyperspace flux antigrav ion fusion warp drive...in a, perhaps, poorly written sci-fi novel. Its fluff. And it makes no damn sense. Emotional energy imprinted on the environment? What the hell does that even mean? How is the energy imprinted? What is the mechanism? What is the substance in the environment that it is imprinted upon? How does the imprint play back like an old VCR tape? That's my first problem with residual hauntings.

My second problem has less to do with how it occurs and more with it why does. I have a problem with believing that any part, fragment or otherwise of a victim will remain trapped to continuous reenactment of the horror that brought their demise. Murder victims are typical of a residual. Children are often seen in residuals. Why would a child's spirit have to endure the better part of eternity being tormented in the afterlife? Even if the child's spirit somehow fragmented and part of it remained...something is not right with this scenario. While we can assume and sometimes see a perpetrator present in the residual scenario, it is typically the victim that is seen by others.

I do not believe in the imprint theory nor that a fragment of a victim's spirit remains trapped in a feedback loop. What I do believe is that some or all of a perpetrator's spirit returns to and remains in that moment of time when they committed their crime(s). The victim does not. This is a purgatory of the perp's own making. Unlike the victim, their mind does split....here not only are they the perp but also the victim...living the pain they caused over and over from the victim's perspective until true remorse frees them.

In this theory, when you see a residual scene play out, you are looking into a parallel dimension (not so far fetched if you follow theoretical physics). This dimension and the 'veil' between is perhaps the thinnest in places of significance such a room where the crime took place. Here one might glimpse into this other dimension and see this scene playing out. This other dimension is an alternate reality of the the perp's making and it is here that the mind is stuck until it can be freed from its karma.

This is all conjecture, of course. Yet to me alone, it intuitively feels pretty close to right.

One idea I had is with what may be residual hauntings is the minds of those involved left a semi-permanent impression upon the area and all things within it. The psychic part of their minds did subconsciously. Traumatic experiences can cause people to do things they ordinarily could not do.
The matter and energy of all atoms in that area then demonstrate a specter image or sounds of events long ago.
Problem with that idea...the events that play out should begin to fad over time.

Some hauntings I believe are NOT hauntings at all, but the over active area of the mind involved with psychic abilities acting out subconsciously and producing the activities and manifestations.

    They can yes.
