Russian submarines are prowling around vital undersea cables. It’s making NATO nervous.

Yeah, they're all in together on a secret intells sharing programme, prism something, its called

Heres a nice map

Submarine Cable Map

That is a nice map, so okay let's say those Russian subs around the cables from the US to UK decides to blow the cables, it's not a total loss...They can divert traffic and route it through South America and up the African coast...Russia has nothing to gain from that...

There are only so many subsea cable layin ships available,, if they cut enough cables in the same week, it will be a long wait
for certain operators.. But you are right,, they will divert the traffic flow, in a few minutes, if not seconds
to new available routes

That actually could create a serious vulnerability, cut enough cables simultaneously and force the victim to use one or two routes...It could take up to 10 years to repair extensive loss or damage in quantity, I would hazard to guess...

Lol, they'd had to cut a lot of cables then, heh Dunno I say they cut beween 3-6 ones just to cause enough trouble ..

Well i figure if they fired a torpedoe it would cause a lot of damage and wreck many lines...If cable laying ships are not readily available it might take a few years to finish repairs...

The insulated fiber-optic cables are fragile, and ships have damaged them accidentally by dragging their anchors along the seabed. That damage happens near the shore, where it is relatively easy to fix, not in the deeper Atlantic, where the cost of mischief could be far greater.
In the past the USN have placed devices around undersea Russian cables to monitor them. With fiber-optics I don't think that is possible.

I think its easier to hack routers and switches to copy data, than to do it from the cables.. Only reason worth messing with them is if they are after to disable them

But being the russians. The might have perfected this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_tapping
And adopted it for deep sea use.. They are phaps reading this as we write with a big grin

The article said they have 60 subs and the US has 66. The Russians modified at least one of them to carry smaller subs in the old missile compartment. It's difficult to discern how capable the Russian navy is. About a year ago their only aircraft carrier the Admiral Kuznetsov which is diesel powered had to be towed through the English channel. The US has 11 carriers and the Gerald R. Ford or Ford class was put into service this year. They eliminated all steam power from the design which will save the navy about a billion dollars over the course of its service.

Its like a economic nuclear winter scenario

From a 2015 Forbes article:

Widespread disruption to undersea communications networks could sabotage in excess of $10 trillion in daily international financial transactions; as noted by Michael Sechrist in a 2012 paper published by the Harvard Kennedy School. The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), Sechrist notes, now uses undersea fiber-optics to transmit data to more than 8300 member institutions in 195 countries.

How Bad Would It Be If The Russians Started Cutting Undersea Cables? Try Trillions In Damage

I don't understand why it would cost that much?...

Well, Apple cant sell its Iphones overseas,, :D

Seriously there are some bad ass $$ traversing these cables, so missing deals and transactions means lost business for " a few " international banks and players on the global market.

Which ofc will hit the ordinary man, with no stakes in the game, hardest.

Even Kim's gov. insurance scams in NK will suffer

Stocks will plummet like what happened during the 30ties depression, only much worse this time around.

Maybe the russians want to tax the 'free world' for ignoring them since the fall of the USSR
