The booms --or "Sky Quakes" are actually a very old phenomenon --I've found some accounts from the 19th century, too.
When I was 18 or so, and on an Outward Bound course in the Colorado Rockies many years ago, me and a group of people experienced one ourselves, as we were rock climbing. It was like a huge explosion or blast with a shock wave. After it happened we strained our eyes to the horizon --looking for a plume of smoke or worse. It sounded like some kind of factory exploded or a bomb went off...
