Wars & Rumours of Wars

There are two spots in a local traffic corridor that are used by political statement-makers directly opposite one another. Often you will have absolutely no idea what they are going on about but they often get a friendly honk or wave.

Yesterday a third group appeared in a very tight area in front of an Asian market. It was all about Gaza, genocide and how evil Israel is. Nobody bothered them but to say that it failed to resonate is putting it mildly. They may have discovered that reality is not what your media sphincter of choice is telling you.

For the last 4 years it seems like overall, things have been deteriorating faster that they're getting better. I really hope something turns the trend around.

Seemingly across the board too, across so many levels of society, it is as much astounding as it is alarming...

That's the effect of de-globalisation. Less common interest countries have, more they would be turning against each other.

1. ) Globalisation up, inflation down, wars down.
2.) Globalisation down, inflation up, wars up.

Just pick it up, option 1.) or option 2.)

Moment Moscow massacre suspects 'were arrested' - as videos show alleged killers of 143 claiming they were paid for the attack as ISIS claims responsibility

Videos shared online show three different men, who Moscow claims were responsible for the attack at the Crocus City Hall on Friday, being detained by what appears to be soldiers fighting for Russia. One of the suspects (right) is seen shaking on his knees, with his hands bound behind his back, apparently confessing to carrying out the massacre for payment. He was reportedly filmed while being held in the Bryansk region after he was found hiding in a tree while trying to flee to Ukraine, which has vehemently denied any role in the bloodbath.

Captured Hamas terrorists say group is 'collapsing from within,' says Israel's defense minister

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday said Hamas terrorists captured by troops said "the group is collapsing from within" as Israel steps up its military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

"In the last week or two, hundreds of terrorists have been captured and what they say about what happened to them tells the whole story. They say that Hamas is collapsing from within, the price they are paying is very heavy," Gallant said, The Times of Israel reported.

"We’re going to eliminate everyone who was involved in the events of October 7, the junior [officials], the senior ones and the very senior ones; those who were inside [Israel] or who gave instructions," he said, referring to the date of Palestinian terror group Hamas’s massive attack on Israel that started the ongoing conflict.

A big problem with a human society is because 1% radicals can dictate what 99% of moderates should do, by simply kicking off self-perpetuating violence circle.

Like, Hamas is not even 1% of Palestinians, but they did some crazy violence, and now 99% of moderate Palestinians have to suffer because handful of extremists. And I'm not saying that because of Palestinians, it constantly happens in all the other societies.

Hamas in Gaza reminds me of the Imperial Japanese Army on Okinawa, specifically at the end with the cliffs. Hard core extremists hiding amongst the civilian population. Many committed suicide believing what they were told.

Freeing the hostages would be a big step toward humanitarian relief I'd think.

The Ukrainian situation in its war with Russia is looking rather grim. Their frontline seems to be collapsing in the face of a slow, but steady, Russian offensive. A much larger offensive is feared in the summer. The Ukrainian ammunition situation is so dire that Russian guns are outfiring Ukrainian ones at a ratio of seven-to-one. In January, it was three-to-one. The combined allied forces of the world cannot keep up with Ukrainian ammunition demand, thanks largely to modern just-in-time supply chains of privatized ammunition works. The continent of Europe (and the United Kingdom) has perfected the art of walking loudly while carrying a small stick.

As I said in this thread more than a year ago now, following Ukraine's successful counter-offensive and the emergence of the ammunition crisis in its wake:
It might have been a good idea for Ukraine to have sought a compromised settlement with Russia at its point of maximum military advantage, which may now be in the past.

The least worst option for Ukraine could now be a negotiation merely to freeze the frontlines where they stand, let alone get back to the pre-February, 2022 frontlines, and much less to take back Crimea from Russia.

Ukraine doesn't make decisions about war. NATO makes decisions. War will stop when NATO says so. Zelenski just passed a law to reduce military draft age from 27 to 25 to recruit additional 500,000 soldiers. Judging by that, ware will go on for at least other 2 years.

Russian missile attacks are becoming significantly weaker, and Ukrainians are now more efficient in shooting down up to 2/3 of missiles.

There are two things to say about this: one is that Zelensky may have mitigated the Ukrainian recruitment crisis by changing the law, but in doing so he has created other problems of a political nature. There is a large number of people who are not going to be very happy about the law change and resultant mass mobilization.

The second thing is that the frontline collapse I mentioned above was not meant to indicate that Ukraine was on the verge of complete annhilation by Russia. Rather that, whereas a year ago the dominant media narrative focused on how Ukraine could capture the last of its territory still in Russia's hands, and after a year without meaningful progress towards that end, despite a much-anticipated counter-offensive last summer, the reality looks likely to be that the territory controlled by Ukraine within its own borders is now about to contract, and there does not seem to be any development on the horizon that is going to tilt the balance back in their favour.

I would hazard a guess that it is going to be a while before we see any more media speculation about strategies Ukraine might employ to re-take Crimea.

NATO is on hold because everybody is waiting to see the outcome of US elections, or should we call it Civil War II.

Some time later this year Ukrainian pilots will be ready with their F-16s, while Russians fleet of desperately needed AWACS planes had been depleted down to just 2 or 3. These AWACS can't be replaced in a hurry. That would mean big change in the dynamics of the conflict, because suddenly Ukrainians will be dominating air, which means even more Russian planes shot down and lots more cruise missiles fired by Ukrainians, both behind the front-lines and into Russia proper.

Ukrainian incoming air-superiority might or might not do much for moving frontline trenches very much, but it will hurt Russians a lot, probably as much as huge tank losses in the beginning of the war. Who knows, we might even see Israeli style deep strikes into Russian heartland, just to shake up the morale a little bit.

Essentially its a stalemate, with small, probably short lived, advantage for Russia. Plus there is some unexpected resilience in Russian war economy. This indicates that there will be no truce till end of 2025, because neither side is completely exhausted.

IIRC in WW2 the conscription age in the US was 21-45. Currently Selective Service requires males 18-25 to register.

25 in Ukraine ? They just lowered it to 25 ? You'd think an invasion and existential threat might be cause for greater motivation.

Russian troops are accused of carrying out illegal chemical attacks in Ukraine, dropping tear gas and other banned weapons of war on the front line 'daily'

Russian troops have been accused of carrying out 'daily' illegal chemical attacks on the Ukrainian front line.

It has been reported that drones have been circling over multiple positions along the Ukrainian front and dropping 'tear gas and other chemicals', which are banned during wartime under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

A commander of the Ukrainian army told the Telegraph: 'The only way for them to successfully attack us [is] with gas,' because his troops are so embedded attacks with conventional artillery or drones firing missiles was difficult.

He added that once the gas strikes, even if it is not fatal, troops panic and 'the first instinct is to get out', after which they can be more easily picked off by Russian forces.

Ukraine has claimed that there have been 626 gas related attacks by Russia since the outbreak of the war.

Another commander from Robotnye, in Zaporizhzhia Oblast where there is an ongoing Russian offensive said that soldiers are now required to carry gas masks at all times, however often they are ex-soviet models therefore not very effective.

One of these grenades was examined by the Telegraph, who reported that Rebekah Maciorowski, an American combat medic had received it from soldiers in the 53rd Mechanised Brigade 'whilst under fire because nobody believed they were being attacked with chemical weapons.'

She also claimed that last year she was on hand when a suspected hydrogen cyanide attack occurred.

Marc-Michael Blum, a chemical weapons expert later confirmed the device received was a K-51 gas grenade, which are usually filled with tear gas.

Biden seems always in a rush to go to war...

Biden says support for Israel is 'ironclad' against Iran as US warns missile attack by Tehran is IMMINENT

President Joe Biden on Wednesday vowed that American support for Israel is 'ironclad' amid concerns the country will be targeted by major missile or drone strikes by Iran.

'As I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad. Let me say it again: ironclad. We're going to do all we can to protect Israel security,' Biden said at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The attack by Iran or its proxies against military and government targets in Israel are imminent, Bloomberg News reported citing intelligence sources, with one source saying it is more a matter of when, not if.

So it begins, Iran sending drones to attack Israel...I doubt any of them will hit their targets, if so it would show a fatal weakness in US and Osrael defenses...
