You may recall that we have - for a number of years - been asking members to limit the amount of cut and paste that they place within their posts. Despite this, some have persisted in doing so, and as a result there are countless thread-openers and posts that contain acres of copyrighted material. Under the controversial, and not yet adopted, EU Copyright Directive, the merest reference - eg a link and a quoted sentence - could, potentially, require that the site hosting the quote must pay a fee to the originator. The threat of this alone could potentially kill off numerous sites, as there is the possibility it will be retroactively applied. Yes, they’re all “could” and “potentially” and “might” and “threat of..” - but that’s enough for our new owners to view this site - and doubtless all the others in the Dennis stable - as dangerously toxic. And it’s not just the EU Copyright thing, which will apparently apply in the UK regardless of EU membership - this also applies to a potentially even bigger problem: General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
