Howard Hughes is a proper journalist. He also has a fantastic voice - reminds me a lot of Tom Baker who is also from Liverpool. My only criticism of his show is that there are a lot of very "kooky" guests mixed in with serious ones.

Ahhhh ... but he deals with them with such grace. Love the that voice. I've sent him a donation or two and he has responded politely and even tossed me a shoutout or two. Stuff like that deserves grassroots support. Fair price for a job well done, no horseshit involved.

Steinberg brings up that he is nearly 73 to garner sympathy to his money begging. That photo he chooses to use is probably the least offensive one of the bunch.
It's also worth noting that those photos are circa 2007-ish. He's still rocking a first gen iPhone in that picture and I know for a fact he owned a 3g because he blogged about it. So add 10+ hard years to that photo.

Ran across this on reddit recently and it made me think of Our Hero and All His Friends (emphasis mine):

"I mostly post in the Jordan Peterson subreddit, and one of his theories is about how lying shapes reality. You tell enough lies and it's hard to tell when one is lying or not after some time. It's easy to look from the outside in and say "someone is rationalizing" or "they're bullshitting" -- but when your reality and survival is reliant on your lies, rationalization is your reality. At some point, I think it stops being a "capacity" and is just how one lives. Many criminals (thieves, mobsters, etc) do not believe they do anything wrong and just do what they need to do. Bad singers on American Idol are crushed and in utter disbelief when they are told they are bad singers. It's not just the person lying to themselves, we also have to consider the network of people they are in that uphold the lie as well."

It must be pretty lonely for Steinberg these days. Many of his enablers have left. Even then those people didn’t contribute money to Steinberg’s cause. The word has gotten out about what Steinberg is up to. The money purses have been closed up.

Perhaps he is really hurting for cash. The problem for him is that he has lied for so long now. No one believes anything he says. He can’t bring himself to find a real job and the websites don’t generate any cash flow. He truly is between a rock and a hard place.

A new installment has been released to the newsletter list - he doesn't just want to break the record he wants to totally smash it:

My ongoing problems!

Hi,

Having to pay the motel one or two days at a time is unsettling. Barbara and I are always at the risk of becoming homeless if the money isn’t there when the motel’s from office requires payment.

Such as today.

On Thursday, I have to pay the storage facility to keep our furniture there.

I’m hoping to find a new apartment soon, but cash flow was low this past summer, as it usually is. So I have a ways to go to cover a move and keep a roof over our heads in the meantime.

The web developer/marketing person is finishing up work on the upgraded YouTube channel and the Paracast site. It’s taking longer than I hoped, but I hope it will be mostly done before the week.

In the meantime, are you able to help me survive for a few more days?

If my math is right Gene's storage payment is due very soon. Even though I know it's coming, I predict it will be a big emergency crisis for him when it is suddenly due and he only has 17 cents. (according to him)

Yep your math is correct Dewey, you posted that on Saturday and here we are on Tuesday...

By the way, I was out of town over the weekend, in the beautiful and remote wilderness of the Appalachian mountains, which is why I wasn't on the forum most of the weekend...Where I was camped I had to hike 3 miles to get to a place to get barely a signal on my cell phone, it was nice not seeing a human being for almost 4 days, just me and my dog and the wild...

As usual I have to remind myself not to believe everything he says.

But if there is some truth in there, potentially he is failing to stockpile cash for a new apartment. I'm just speculating but I also have to think his ability to get a new lease, even if he has money, has to be limited. Knowing that could lead to less of an effort to amass the cash. Potentially he knows he has to wait it out until a low income option becomes available?

He must be a joy to the motel management and staff, as a semi-permanent resident. They must know this won't end well. I'd want the Steinbergs off my hands were I in their shoes.

And yes, the dreaded storage facility bill makes its appearance, like the Death Star hoving into view. Again I think we know there is not likely a happy conclusion there, unless he really is quietly hoarding up more cash than he lets on. Which is possible; I certainly expect him to make things sound dire as long as he can, and revealing he has a "cash reserve" doesn't help him.

All hopes pinned on the Paracast site... and an upgraded YouTube channel. What?

The problem is the situation has been just as dire many times before. Assuming it were all true, no matter what happens, he does absolutely nothing to change the situation. If he is still around in 10 years I suspect we will be in a similar place with the begging continuing.

Can you image another 10 years of him begging for money!!

I really think he will beg so long as he is able to do so. I might be wrong. He just doesn't appear to be able to stop himself.

Today for some reason (possibly prompted by the discussions of Gene trying to sell five-year Paracast+ subscriptions), I find myself imagining Gene as he is finally struck down by the Almighty, asking with his last breath why the Good Lord couldn't have taken his co-host instead, and spared Gene....

First, I'm going to point out, as I did on Twitter, that he has himself stated that he gets Social Security. Yesterday (it's Wednesday, 9/5 where I am now) was the very latest he would have gained access to that money. He stated he gets $1700 a month. Well, son, there's your rent for the month. Most Extended Stay places run about $150-$200 a week where I am. Pay that up front, you've got breakfast every morning and a roof over your head for a month.

Now I honestly don't know how much storage would go for; I'm assuming it's based on how big the space is, so I'm going to guess at least a hundred bucks for his storage.

Now here's where Gene-O and I part ways.

I would be ensuring that my phone bill and car insurance was paid, and I would be busting my ass on Uber/Lyft every day from sunrise to sunset, since he says he can't drive at night -- I actually have issues with that myself, so I'm perhaps a hair more simpatico there. Seriously, from what I've heard, and since Phoenix is a tourist destination, not to mention the large demographic of elderly/disabled folks who can't drive but who are going to need to go to the drugstore or the grocery store or wherever right now since it's the first of the month, he should be cleaning up.

Instead, what's he doing?

Begging some more.

*sigh*

This isn't an impossible situation, Gene-O. It's really not. You can still turn it around right now. I don't know that you'll always be able to. And honestly, I think most of us would like to see you do so.

Ain't gonna hold m'breath, though.

From afar and somewhat believing Gene's stories (or at least the record of evictions...), it seems the Steinbergs can't or won't budget.

My impression is the Steinbergs get $1700 total monthly, in two Social Security payments. I believe that one would be paid the 2nd Wednesday of a month, the other the 4th Wednesday of a month. That first payment would be Gene's, the second Barbara's.

That is speculative, based on what I've read online about SS benefits payments, and what Erickson has noted about Gene's bankruptcy filings in other posts.

If I am correct though the Steinbergs are "dry" til 9/12 this month. Potentially after 9/12 the begging will taper off, then resume, then fall off again for a bit after 9/26. Maybe. Who knows.

No idea what their monthly storage unit fees might be, or if Gene had the sense to set aside some cash for that apparently imminent charge. I expect he'll make it a crisis in his emails regardless. I don't know, it's hard to tell how bad off they really are since as we've learned the emails are always going to portray their circumstances as terrible, even when Gene is simultaneously out whooping it up in a fancy new car he just leased.

Seems every afternoon or evening I check my email there is a little present for me from Gene, just found this new gem:

Mounting pressures!

Hi,

Here’s where it stands:

I have to pay the motel today to continue to stay here.

I have to pay the storage facility tomorrow so they’ll keep our furniture there for another month.

I’m coping with other obligations best I can, and after buying more groceries yesterday, the bank accounts and PayPal are near zero.

As I wrote the other day, I’m hoping to find a new apartment soon, but cash flow this past summer has been low, as it usually is. So I have a ways to go to cover a move and keep a roof over our heads in the meantime.

Anders, our web developer/marketing person, is finishing up work on the upgraded YouTube channel and the Paracast site. It’s taking longer than I hoped, but it will get done no later than this week.

In the meantime, are you able to help me survive for a few more days?
