a gathering of eagles

one fair day here on the coast, we were out at quinault, in the rain forest, at the gifting stump, listening to a crow argue with something definitely not crow.
that set the mood into the mysterious.
we drove on, down a gravel road thru a dark part where trees blocked all light.
suddenly, a swoop of white, a bald eagle flew down in front of my car and flew there for a while,
its wings wider than my honda. eventually the eagle flew up to a tree top and sat there, facing east toward the river. i thought it strange behavior for an eagle. ive heard of eagles and hawks flying beside your car,
but not in front of it.
a few weeks later, we went out again, and i was telling carolina tammy about this strange behavior
and how i hoped to see that eagle again, and immediately there were two eagles, sitting in a tree right beside the road. they sat there and posed for us, about ten feet away.
i thought that was cool enough. i asked for an eagle, and got two.
but that was not the end of it.
we drove on, to the lookout, a high place above the river. wild and beautiful.
there were more eagles than i could count. they were everywhere, flying in spirals,
perched in trees, they were not fishing, no salmon running. they were hanging out, a family reunion?
i had thought that the phrase "a gathering of eagles" was simply a poetic expression.
to be able to see such a gathering was a privilege, a very poetic one.
in great leaps of imagination, i might almost have felt
invited.
or incredibly lucky.
