Down in the deep, beneath the Antarctic ice, a new strange world is rapidly forming

"Under the Antarctic ice, in the pitch-black depths of the ocean, Australian scientists have discovered animals are evolving into strange and sometimes monstrous new shapes and forms.

"Life, these scientists believe, is using the frigid Antarctic waters to experiment, and animals there are evolving at a much faster pace than anywhere else in the world.

Those coordinates are off the coast of Namibia.

No, but I bet odd or prehistoric throwbacks that come out of deep dark places probably don't look so radically different. Greenland sharks, etc. There are some real horror shows swimming around down there - and that's one of them.

Check out Astonishing Legends #32 about Lake Baikal that covers the story. I can see how something unusual and maybe scary looking being found unexpectedly could become the genesis for a more fantastic story.

Personally, I'm more than a bit fish-phobic. They all give me the heebie-jeebies, even Charlie the Tuna.

There was a story of a giant shape shifting octopus supposedly found in a lake deep under the Antarctic ice. Since it would be completely dark what would be the point in a shape shifting ability?

the reports were never confirmed (soviet russia and all that) but i find them interesting
