The electoral college is important and must not be abolished or this country would be one step closer to mob rules and socialism...President Trump isn't the first one to win without winning the most popular votes, and it shows our system works...
That's simply not correct....it would not be 'mob rules'...it would actually be true democracy. All state and local elections are by popular vote as they really should be.
The electoral college was originally instituted because the 'Founding Father's didn't really trust the people (education levels and other factors...) to elect someone that might be a bad person....or someone they didn't think should be in office. This was sort of a fail safe but it was never intended to thwart the will of the people and true democracy. We no longer need it and in fact it doesn't represent the people as we saw in Trump's case, who was not liked by the majority that voted across the nation yet the 'college' elected him....btw those on the college
can change their vote against the popular vote for that state. What this tells us is that the people did not truly elect Trump (or any others in the past ) but that the so-called electoral college did and those people really decided the fate of the presidential election even t hough the majority in the country voted for someone else.
BTW..this has nothing to do with Clinton or Trump per se.....but the fact that either the people truly elect the President or we just use let the college do it from now on since it can overrule popular vote.
This becomes a philosophical discussion on whether or not it was a good idea from day one in 1787 to implement this.
There was also talk of Congress electing the President, the governors of the states, state legislators, a special Congress group, or the people at large. They decided on the people but with oversight from the electoral college to make sure that the people didn't elect a tyrant or heavily favor one candidate since the people might be poorly informed.
As I said earlier with today's media and news the people know a great deal about what's going on so the college becomes a moot point imho.
