Its terrible , they are saying now in Australia that all the new Covid cases being detected here are either the South African, UK , Japan or Brazilian mutant strains and are of course all far worse than the normal Coronavirus. Mainly from people returning from overseas .

First Known Cases of COVID-19 in Great Apes

COVID-19 has been previously reported in animals such as dogs, cats, bats, and minks. Numerous tigers and lions even tested positive for the virus at a New York zoo back in April of last year. And now, for the first time, it has infected several gorillas at a California zoo. (I think it’s very important to note that while some animals have caught the virus from humans, there is no evidence that they play a significant role in transferring the virus to us.)

As many as eight gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park may be infected with COVID-19 and two of them have already tested positive with a third one showing symptoms. These are the first known cases of the virus naturally infecting great apes (this group includes gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and bonobos).

Early last week, the staff noticed that some of the gorillas were moving a bit slower and were sneezing as well as breathing a little heavier. Then on January 6th, two of the gorillas were coughing so the staff collected samples of their feces. Preliminary testing detected the virus on January 8th, and upon further analysis, it was confirmed on January 11th by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) that the animals had the virus.

In a statement, Lisa Peterson, who is the executive director of San Diego Zoo Safari Park, said, “Aside from some congestion and coughing, the gorillas are doing well,” adding, “The troop remains quarantined together and are eating and drinking. We are hopeful for a full recovery.” She went on to say, “They’ve got some minor symptoms, but they’re drinking and eating.” “We can tell the difference because our team works so closely with them.”

According to the statement, it is believed that the gorillas were infected by an asymptomatic staff member who ended up testing positive for COVID-19 over a week ago. This means that the entire troop of gorillas could have been exposed.

Interestingly, humans share approximately 98% of our DNA with gorillas. “The closer you are on the evolutionary tree, the more likely you are to be susceptible to the same disease,” noted Pascal Gagneux who is a UC San Diego zoologist and who studies primate evolution.

Since the zoo’s gorillas receive flu vaccines, it is possible that they may eventually get the COVID-19 vaccine, although there are no immediate plans. “I would never want to speculate on when that might be possible,” Peterson stated, adding, “We need to focus on the human side of this first and really get it under control in our communities.”

Over 20 people vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine die in Norway

In Norway, 23 people vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine against coronavirus have died, as stated on the website of the Norwegian Agency for Medicines.

Specialists are investigating the causes of death of citizens. Some 13 cases have already been examined, according to Europe News citing the said agency.

Vaccination against coronavirus with Pfizer's drug began in Norway on December 27. Residents of nursing homes in Oslo were the first to be vaccinated.

The U.S. has also begun vaccinating the population with drugs from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna. In Great Britain, the use of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines was approved.

The CDC expects a staggering loss of life in the next three weeks.

    (Excerpts)

As cases surge across the U.S., hospitals are becoming overwhelmed and the death toll is climbing. But a recent warning from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hints that the most horrifying days are not yet behind us, predicting an unprecedented wave of deaths from the disease in the coming weeks.
    ____

The historic loss of life has already topped major events, with current figures placing the U.S. death toll due to the pandemic greater than the number of losses suffered while fighting in World War II. Researchers say that at this rate, the national life expectancy will likely drop by more than a year to 77.48 years—the lowest it's been since 2003, CNN reports.

Ice cream from China contaminated with coronavirus

Three samples of ice cream from a Chinese company tested positive for COVID-19, and thousands of boxes of the dessert have been confiscated as a result.

The contaminated ice cream caused Tianjin Daqiaodao Food Company to dump 2,089 boxes of the product, although officials believe more than double that amount -- 4,836 boxes -- has been contaminated, Sky News reported.

More than half the total boxes had already been distributed for sale when the positive tests were discovered. Market regulation authorities in other provinces outside Tianjin where the ice cream was sent were notified of the issue, and customers who may have purchased the product are being told to report their health to community officials.

According to the report, 1,662 employees were tested at the company Thursday and were quarantining.

Officials believe the coronavirus was able to survive in the ice cream due to the cold temperature and was likely transferred from a person who had the disease.

Dr. Stephen Griffin, a virologist based at the University of Leeds, told Sky News the instance of contamination was likely a "one-off" and not indicative of a broader issue with the plant itself.

"Of course, any level of contamination is not acceptable and always a cause for concern, but the chances are that this is the result of an issue with the production plant and potentially down to hygiene at the factory," Griffin said.

Initial epidemiological investigations revealed Tianjin produced the batch of ice cream using raw materials including milk powder imported from New Zealand and whey powder imported from Ukraine.
