Doctor warns COVID becoming 'too clever' and 'breaking past immune defences'
COVID infections are surging because the virus is constantly evolving and becoming "too clever", the WHO's special envoy on the virus has told Sky News.Dr David Nabarro has urged people to "respect the virus" as it was revealed COVID related deaths had exceeded 200,000 in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The data was published on Wednesday as a new wave, mainly driven by Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, hits the UK.
COVID restrictions could be reintroduced if the rising number of cases has an impact on the NHS backlog, health minister Lord Kamall has warned. Dr Nabarro told Sky News' Kay Burley on Thursday morning: "This virus is capable of constantly evolving and changing.
"The reason why we've got an increase is it's changed yet again and it's become too clever for us. It can break past our immune defences, and that's why the numbers are going up."
Increased socialising and people no longer taking precautions such as wearing face masks have also contributed to the rise in COVID cases, Dr Nabarro said.
"My advice to everyone is please, this virus hasn't gone away, it's not killing so many people but it is really unpleasant especially if you get long COVID." Precautions still matter, Dr Nabarro said, adding: "Even though we don't like it we have to go on respecting this virus."

New wave of Omicron mutations spreading across Europe, EU Medicines Agency warns
A new wave of Covid-19 is sweeping across Europe driven by Omicron mutations, an EU Medicines Agency official has warned. Head of vaccines at the agency, Marco Cavaleri, has said "the increase in transmission among older age groups is starting to translate into severe disease".The increase in the number of people testing positive is being driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 mutations of the Omicron variant.
In April, the EMA advised people aged over 80 to get a second vaccine booster. Now, they recommend people aged between 60-79 and medically vulnerable of any age to get the booster.
Mr Cavaleri said: "As this new wave is unfolding over the EU, it is essential to maintain protection of vulnerable groups and avoid any postponement of vaccination."
Most coronavirus restrictions have been dropped across Europe and many people are using the summer to take a holiday for the first time since the pandemic began.
Latest statistics from the ONS show that one in 30 people in the UK had the virus in the week to 24 June, which is an increase of 32% on the week before.
The UN health agency said in its latest weekly report on the pandemic that the worldwide number of deaths remained relatively similar to the week before, at about 8,500.
COVID related deaths increased in three regions: the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Americas.

And we have seen multiple confirmatory pieces that the virus was made in a lab, one of the better ones here on zenodo and with its own cute video for non-Bayesian peeps here. As of writing this those links are still up which at 12 months is pretty good going for any article that dares challenge the drivel propagandised by our beloved “free press [sponsored by pharma]”.
Anyway, BLAST is the NCBI/NIH (aka US government) repository for genomic and proteomic sequences, amongst other things. It is where all genome scientists around the world deposit their sequences if they make a discovery. Its main function is to allow comparison of gene sequences and discovery of sequences that match one that you might have come across in your experiment. What’s a gene sequence? That’s easy. It’s a line of code, made up of any combination of 4 letters in a sequence. Remember the film GATTACA? If you haven’t watched it by now, you should - because it’s yet another dystopian movie that is now too close to home.
