Hardly surprising that there was no transportation revolution with this tunnel and a severe diminution of the initial promises made of what it would do. When there were initially announced speeds of 120-150 mph I thought things might be gearing up to have this presented as some sort of fulfilment of the nonsense Hyperloop concept by a bit of PR sleight-of-hand. But even that much more modest goal turns out to be more difficult to achieve than first supposed.
Musk tends to demonstrate that if you throw enough money at something, you might be able to achieve it. Not necessarily profitably or usefully achieve it. Just achieve it. Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs often seem to think that, because they have had success in making computer software, they know everything there is to know about making everything. But those things which are not directly improved by the advances in semiconductor technology (like computers and software), or battery technology, are much more stubborn in permitting breakthroughs.
