You have probably heard of ferromagnetism, But have you heard of ferroelectricity?
Ferroelectricity Gets its name because it's similar to Ferromagnetism,
Materials that are Ferromagnetic much like iron is made up of magnetic domains with north and south poles,
If the domains line up, The material itself becomes magnetic,
Much like Ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity is made up of crystals That have dipoles,
Meaning they have a separate negative and positive charge if the dipoles are aligned they can possess a separate negative and positive charge "Think like a battery" Usually the dipoles are pointed in random directions, But they can be coerced into uniformity, The same way Iron, for example, can be forced to align when exposed to a strong magnetic field, A ferroelectric poles will align when exposed to a strong enough electric field, Weirdly, They will say that way when the electric field is removed because they have a memory.
When a new electric field is introduced the memory will lag behind aligning to the new field, This phenomenon is called hysteresis. Figuring out exactly why this hysteresis occurs took science over 80 years to figure out, eventually, in 1935 a German mathematician described ferric materials as small magnetic parts called hysterons, Each hysteron could change it's polarization at a well-defined speed when exposed to a strong enough electric field, Each hysteron it seems could have its own polarization without affecting its neighbors.
The Preisach Model describes this much better than I ever could,
However, For those like me who can never get enough information, Here is a Wiki article about this very subject. Preisach model of hysteresis - Wikipedia
What does this mean for us, Ultimately, Data is about to become much much smaller and possibly at its pinnacle, We may even be able to process data at the speed of light. But for now, Near infinite storage capacity is a great thing, yes?
Anyway, This post was fun, But My Nah Nah Nah boo boo post was just a little more informative with more wisdom thrown about.
Ferroelectricity, It's going to push quantum computing beyond anything we have ever imagined. Get ready, The future is coming for us all.
