Here's one I forgot about.
FDR's home in Hyde Park NY is a national park. Years ago there was a small Howard Johnson's across the street and my Mom was a waitress there. She worked second and third shifts. The NPS has staff their either all night, or very early or very late. Whatever their schedule was she told me several times that more than one of the rangers would come in completely rattled because the home itself - Springwood - was haunted and FDR's mother was a stone bitch. Thing is, Mom definitely required a bit of filtering but as a kid it took a while to figure that out.
Forgot about it and grew up. Now HoJo's is gone and someone had the sense to put a decent brewery there.
So about ten years ago my wife and I were taking the tour, which I've done countless times, and for some reason we had a group of slowpokes. I fell to the back so I could snoop a little - not crossing any velvet ropes just taking my taking my time. There was one NPS ranger, and older guy, with me and out of the blue I asked him "you got any good ghost stories?"
He pulled me aside so we could speak privately and said "absolutely yes." He was locking the place up and was in the room you enter when you step in the front door and Sara Roosevelt walked in from another room and told him he was trespassing and to get out of her house! Looked like a real solid person to him and he was so shocked he couldn't move. He blinked and she was nowhere to be seen.
I don't know what to make of that but he seemed perfectly sincere. Based on his age I had to wonder if he used to go over for eggs & chainsmoking after his shift and talk to my Mom.
