Thousands of fish mysteriously die in Malaysia

Thousands of dead fish have mysteriously floated to the surface of a man-made lake at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for the past few days.

Efforts have since been carried out by lecturers from the university’s Aquatic Resource Science and Management Programme to identify the cause of the mass death of the fish.

One of the lecturers, Dr Aazani Mujahid, disclosed that the university received reports regarding the alarming number of dead fish – previously donated by the Inland Fisheries Department – last week.

Since then, she said more dead fish of various species were found floating on the surface of the lake.

Thousands of dead fish on Alabama beaches

Thousands of fish have gone belly-up on the surface of Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores, or have washed ashore this week.

The large fish kill on Alabama’s Gulf Coast was likely the result of the recent cold temperatures, according to Alabama conservation officials.

Hundreds of dead fish in Jacksonville Florida

On Friday, hundreds of dead fish floated to the surface of the lake on San Jose Boulevard, which is also known as the "Duck Pond."

"Usually, the pond looks healthy," neighbors Jim and Marry Burch said. "(It's) extremely alarming."

The strange phenomenon has neighbors wondering what caused all of the fish to die, while ducks and other birds appear to be unharmed.

28 minke whale deaths along East coast

U.S. launches investigation into 28 minke whale deaths along East coast. Government agency says that's double annual average, declares 'unusual mortality event'.

U.S. fisheries officials are raising the alarm about fatalities among another whale species after 28 confirmed minke whale deaths along the East coast in the past year, more than double the annual average.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has declared the deaths an "unusual mortality event" and launched an investigation, covering Maine to Florida.

It is the first time the U.S. agency has simultaneously investigated the deaths of three different large whale species in the same geographic area, NOAA Fisheries officials confirmed during a teleconference on Wednesday.

Investigations into an alarming number of deaths of North Atlantic right whales and humpback whales are ongoing in a bid to determine the causes and identify ways to prevent future deaths, they said.

Tens of thousands of dead sea creatures wash up on British beach

1520370296853.jpg

When British photographer Lara Maiklem heard tens of thousands of sea creatures washed up on a beach near her hometown of Kent, England, over the weekend she had to see the scene for herself. So, she woke her 5-year-old twins in time to catch the tide.

Maiklem described the scene as "shocking" and "sad," but at the same time, she had to admit it was an "incredible" sight. In fact, it was "almost biblical in scale," she added.

"There were thousands upon thousands of starfish, with crabs, sea urchins, fish and sea anenomies mixed in with them," Maiklem told Fox News. "Someone even found a lobster."

The creatures covered the sandy beach like a thick blanket. Maiklem and her two kids tried to rescue as many fish as they could, tossing them one by one back into the sea.

The animals were the victims of a cold spell – what Maiklem called a "beast from the east" – that hit the U.K. last week. Similar scenes were reported down the coast, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, a wildlife conservation charity, said in a news release on Wednesday.

“There was a three degree drop in sea temperature last week which will have caused animals to hunker down and reduce their activity levels," Bex Lynam, North Sea marine advocacy officer for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said in a statement. "This makes them vulnerable to rough seas – they became dislodged by large waves and washed ashore when the rough weather kicked in."

Crabs, starfish and mussels were "ankle-deep" in some places, though at least two lucky marine species seemed to survive the freeze: lobsters and crabs.

“Lobsters and crabs can survive out of water, unlike the majority of the other creatures washed up," Lynam told Fox News. "Also they have a hard exoskeleton, which offers them a certain level of protection when being thrown around by the sea.”

Maiklem said she also found several dead sea birds washed up along the same stretch.

"I understand it is a natural phenomena," Maiklem said. "I'm pleased I went to see it, but I wouldn't like to see it again."

Wildlife officials also hope they won't see a repeat of the disaster.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is working with local fisherman to clear the beach and rescue any remaining species that are still alive.

"This area is very important for shellfish and we work alongside fishermen to promote sustainable fisheries and protect reproductive stocks," Lynam said. "It’s worth saving them so that they can be put back into the sea and continue to breed."

Dr. Lissa Batey, senior living seas officer with The Wildlife Trusts, an organization made up of 47 local wildlife trusts in the U.K., said the government can help the creatures by designating more marine conservation zones.

“We can’t prevent natural disasters like this – but we can mitigate against declining marine life and the problems that humans cause by creating enough protected areas at sea and by ensuring that these sites are large enough and close enough to offer fish, crustaceans, dolphins and other marine life the protection they require to withstand natural events such as this," Batey said in a statement.

For this case i think it could be the water pollution that caused it. I wonder how weather could affect it as stated in the article..

“The sudden change in weather can also make the fish die, particularly when our weather is rather unpredictable right now thus causing stress on the fish,”

The real headline:
Thousands of fish mysteriously die at Unimas’ man-made lake

Now gee what could have gone wrong?

1. It was a man-made lake. Perhaps if it was a woman-made lake the fish would have faired better.

2. Runoff is a suspect. Pollution, nutrients, pesticides, weed killer, could be anything.

3. Temperature is a suspect.

4. Nobody has brought up oxygen, but algae blooms or weed killer could have led to low oxygen levels.

Mass dead fish wash up all the time after storms on the coast down my way as a result of tidal surges and also quite a few second World War bombs and modern day bombs wash up. (Bombing range on the coast used for Nato and UK exercises nearby).

Had a couple of Whales wash up a few years back as well...

Seems strange though for such a thing to happen in a lake?

All 38 pilot whales stranded on a remote West Coast river mouth have now died.

It was initially believed 32 whales had washed up near Haast, in South Westland, but an aerial survey of the area revealed a further six whales on the beach.

Department of Conservation (DOC) spokeswoman Jose Watson said 38 whales had stranded in total – 33 on the south side of the Okuru River and five to the north.
