Star Trek Strange New Worlds

I watched season 2 episode 1 the other day and thought it was kind of stupid. Gave it another chance last night. Carol Kane is the new Chief Engineer and she's an absolute pisser. Didn't see that coming. Decent series, have to look at it with a younger set of eyes but I like it.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | Meet Pelia: The Enterprise's New Chief Engineer

There is a fight scene with Dr.Mbenga and Nurse Chapel. So, they take a shot and turn into John Wick? Silly.

I was S2E02 last night. Someone was channeling the old episode Courtmartial and mixed in some current day Wokery. The plot itself is awkward and a bit out-of-canon but they all did a good job with it.

Apparently I'm the only one watching this. It's quite, clever, very well done and has some funny bits in it. Like any show it takes time to establish character.

No spoilers here. S2E03 was time travel and Captain Kirk (again). They could've only mentioned Kirk in this entire series and never shown him. They decided to include him and thankfully the actor doing Kirk is doing a pretty good job not a Shatner impression.

fiddlesticks.

I admit to being half way through but I get the gist. Not canon, lots of details, just ain't right. It's close enough for me frankly. Up until season 3 of Picard I was 'no longer of the body' to go all Landru. I've been a geek Trekkie since way back in the before time and have the tribble to prove it. This is episodic Trek in 2023 attempting to appeal to a younger audience, IMO. Maybe not the best effort but it's a return to episodic ST reminiscent of TOS. I've enjoyed it including the most recent one. I forget what the name of it was ...........

I only skipped through cartoon Scottish coffee cup guy. He says it isn't canon but I look back at things like Discovery and the first two seasons of Picard and at least seven crappy movies and wonder what exactly canon is anymore. Screwing with original characters, I get it.

But what the hell, it's grown on me and I enjoy it. I make the case that they've returned to the original episodic model that has good stories and character development and not a season long complicated plot. They've addressed current issues very much like the original series and have made the characters look understandable and speak to a contemporary audience. Yeah, some things are a little much but for me it's a much more positive, thoughtful iteration.

I've enjoyed this show quite a bit and I know that I seem to be the exception here in that regard. There are so many subtle callbacks and references to TOS it's fun to watch for the little ones that whizz by.

However, season 2 episode 9 Subspace Rhapsody was unwatchable. Clever idea, well executed - and completey unwatchable. Had to fast forward through most of it. It even features JG Hertzler as a one-eyed Klingon (go figure) and still managed to suck. I give them credit for trying something new. Lucifer was a show that I tried to like, it was generally OK but was inconsistent. Unfortunately Tom Ellis can't really sing but thinks he can and inflicted far too much of that on everyone, including a huge musical episode much like the thing I just saw last night. Nooooooooo thanks to all that.
