Streaming Gizmos. How to hack a Firestick.

Now, this is something people may not know about me, I like to Create Homebrew Software. I used to be part of a team of developers and we helped in the development of the stack overflow exploit that allowed the PSP to run homebrew code.

Tinkering with electronics to push them to do things they weren't meant to do is just in my blood.
So, As time went on, More and more electrons became open source meaning they were either partly unlocked or completely open to run homebrew code. This was a good thing for the world at large, but a Bad thing for homebrew communities. Many communities for homebrew development went completely under. Like QJ, Short for quick jump. And My home, Dcemu.co.uk..

I never lost the love for pushing hardware boundaries though. Anyway, If I have Something electronic around me, There is a good chance it does something you have never seen that piece of hardware do before. It's just how I am.. in the last few years, I've gotten horribly into Streaming. Not Like Normal Streaming like Netflix, Though, Yeah. I'm into all of that too. But, Streaming Data from one device to another using wireless network ftps.

So when it comes to Streaming, It usually begins with the Thought, Boy I sure wish I could Share My phone screen to my Tv, Or some other Device and play this game or use this app on a larger screen. It leads to Mirroring and Screencasting. You will Swiftly discover oh wow, Screencasting is horrible and Slow and it is so much lag and stutter, Maybe you go all out and decide, Okay, I'm going to buy some streaming hardware like a Chrome Cast. A Chromecast isn't a bad solution, It's faster and streams in a more stable manner than just raw dogging it with your phone to a smart tv. The Problem with Chromecast is, That's all it really does. It's just a streaming server/host and not much else. Eventually, you will ask yourself, Why can't I cruise the web on the chromcast or play a game or something? You will then be looking into the various set-top boxes like android or maybe an amazon firestick. There are several choices.

Of them all, I highly recommend The Amazon Firestick 4k. It's supposedly locked but that's just an amazon illusion, You can immediately begin sideloading android apps on the device out of the box. The trick is knowing how to get nonmarket apps onto the Firestick.

Because Trust me, The amazon Firestick Marketplace is a joke. You won't want to use it.

Okay, So you will need to either Get a USB thumb drive and hook it to the firestick or you can use a wireless file transfer system, to just ftp them to the firestick from a pc web browser. its not that difficult. At this point, you are going to want to get a new app store for your firestick. Google play in itself is banned from all amazon Firesticks. Some sort of business deal between Google and amazon fell through and most Authenticated Google software won't function on the firestick. It's not the end of the world, there are a great many aftermarket apps stores that will be glad to fill the void. I recommend an app called Apptoid.tv you can find it through a google search.

By doing this, you can completely unlock your firestick at this point it's a 2gig quad-core computer. For better or for worse.

Im using my firestick right now to send this message to the forums. It's a neat little device, I have something set up on it called retroarch, It makes my firestick act as if its a ps3, complete with the XMB and everything. That said, It will only run anything from 4 bit to 64 bit, Beyond that, it gets kind of messy.

Still. A 30 dollar solution to a low level gaming pc that plugs right into an hdmi socket and has built-in web browser and some mid-level gaming. That's pretty sweet..

I don't know why more people don't have those firesticks. It's literally like the best deal on planet earth for the power it has vs the price.

Anyway. I'm out, Peace guys.
