Well it's true this subject has been beaten in the ground but it's likely it will continue given the predilection of Gene it will continue here and elsewhere.

As for myself this begging thing as been in my awareness for awhile now but it quite frankly never bothered me. I thought it was unfortunate at first and then pathetic. I could have cancelled the never ending emails, it's easy to see that these go right I to the rubbish bin after all.

It was only until this previous weekend that it all became too much, and rightly or wrongly, when he chided a well intentioned listener and used that point to suggest they were coming out of the woodwork and piling on, I couldn't keep quiet any longer. It just pissed me off.

But I think @3FEL9 has a good point so I'll do better from wringing this subject dry.

There’s no rest for the weary.

Last night at 9:58 PM Arizona time, I received a phone call from someone with mostly garbled speech, except for something about Teddy Bear. The Caller ID reflected a mobile phone known to be owned by one of online stalkers.

Several hours later, I received an email from a commerce site about an attempt to hack the account, first by changing the email account to which it points. But their security team stopped the attempt in its tracks. I reset the password and filed a complaint about an unauthorized use of my account.

Some time back, an online streaming account (not Netflix) was hacked and an attempt was made to have it cancelled.

AI am working with security experts to shore up all of my accounts even further to help prevent the ongoing hacks.

I’ve also received suggestions about finding an attorney specializing in cybercrime who’d work pro bono.

Here’s what I need now!

I have to pay the motel tomorrow for another week. I’m also saving for moving and move-in expenses for another apartment, but I’m running out of cash.

Without enough money to go on, the threat that Barbara and I will end up destitute and homeless, or in a nursing home. may come to pass.

I’m trying to go on.

Gene really does seem to think he is still just fighting a flamewar on Usenet. People didn't like Attack of the Rockoids and how he promoted it back in the day; now people don't like his hyperbolic requests for handouts every few days. Just a bunch of haters. You have to go after them like the bullies they are, he'll tell you, which in his case seems to mean playing the victim and wildly misrepresenting what others are actually doing and saying.

Great post. Check this out, here is Gene's responses after Biedny left almost EIGHT years ago. The thread is 30 pages, I didn't go through them all, but here's a snippet of it:

You need an education about my situation:

Computer consulting is a job. I get paid for it. The presence of the Apple Genius Bar at several local stores, which provide free support, has reduced my income from such gigs, but I still get them from time to time. I don't do consulting free — ever, except for occasional phone support to existing clients.

Writing is a job. I have been receiving money for writing for several decades; I wrote 30 books. I got paid advances for them, and some even earned out, meaning I actually got royalties. When I sell ads for my commentary site, the writings are paid for.

The radio shows do have paid ads. Therefore they are not hobbies.

My current financial issues are due to extraordinary expenses that we couldn't anticipate or prepare for. Cash flow has also been slow in recent months due to the state of the economy, but not non-existent. I mean the guy was being indignant about his financial situation almost a decade ago, and defending his lifestyle. Listing a bunch of crap that may have at one point made him money, does not equate to current employment. It would be like me starting a social media or videogame stream or something and then begging for money saying 'well its not my fault no one is watching, but its still my job, so someone needs to give me money for it!'

He has lived in a bubble where he refuses to change, and expects people to pay for his lack of action, and his 'temporary' issues have went on documented for over 8 years now - and most likely longer than that.

Two radio shows.

Writing, online and elsewhere.

That's four if you count the radio shows separately.

Spot on. As someone who's working on a second degree, for a guy who claims to be an esteemed "tech author", why didn't he spend some ACTUAL effort in the 90s to work towards learning actual technical skills instead of being an AOL/Mac fanboy who trolled message boards? You know, study networking, get CompTIA certifications, etc?

The guy has spent most of his life with a 'career' in fairly rudimentary how-to books and running a half-assed podcast with poor jokes and virtually no research or effort into the discussion.

It's like he said at some point, since he's a fan of UFO/Apple, then that's it, call it day - people need to give me a career and retirement savings now! If we all could only come to this simple conclusion.

Utterly Urgent! I Need Help Now!

Apparently today is his deadline day for different things. Movers, hotel stay, whatever else.

There are two things I've noticed that show exactly why he is so difficult to believe. Either he is lying, or is completely nonsensical to the point of being stupid.

Yesterday, and for the past week, he stated he needed to renew his car registration to be able to drive with Uber and Lyft to make money - and that due to not having money for registration he can't drive and earn money to pay for other things, so is losing a lot of income. But at the same time he says he's setting money aside for an apartment, as well as trying to save for movers. These things do not compute.

If this is the case, why isn't this priority number ONE?! You have a bottleneck to actually earning income, that could be made up once that's restored, but instead he's stating he's trying to save for a new apartment on the side instead of pay for the thing that would allow him to earn more income?? This makes no logical sense. It's like saying 'well I cant work, there's no gas in my car! can someone give me money instead?' and having the money to go fill up the tank in the first place, but just not doing it.

The second thing is, he's scrambling at the same to get movers to move his stuff, which he's said before doesn't have value, to go into storage … and then pay for the storage!

At a time when I should be enjoying my life, all I have is stress.

I went to bed last night half hoping I wouldn’t wake up.

The movers are arriving today to move my stuff from the apartment to a storage facility. But I am running hundreds of dollars short, and they will need to be paid as soon as they pack the truck.

Tomorrow I have to pay the motel again to stay here any longer.

In the meantime, Barbara is trying to recover from her recent surgery. I don’t want her to go with me Friday when the movers arrive; she needs bed rest and she’s suffered enough already.

I am continuing to search for an affordable place to live and I am setting aside money to cover what it’ll cost to occupy the residence. But even a low-end motel drains money fast.

Like, I can't even process this. He wonders why people question him, when there's clear lack of logic, and lack of being forthcoming from him. He didn't pay the car registration because he doesn't want to do anything to earn income, which is what he's refusing to admit. He words things in a purposely deceiving way because he knows the more forthcoming he is, the more logic can be applied to the fact he's really not trying or working to get himself out of this.

Oh, and throw in the passive aggressive suicidal header now, among all things as well.

Once again, here's the solution:

1) Stop worrying about your worthless crap and let it go.
2) Pay your damn car registration
3) Eat ramen until you can save enough for an apartment
4) Go apply at Wal-Mart for a reasonable position and lose the entitlement

If he's worried about garnishments, most states don't even take garnishments until after a certain amount of take home pay is met, so that's illogical to begin with.

It makes no sense to me either. I feel he must be misrepresenting things to convey a sense of pressure and urgency that might motivate people to give him money.

To pick one example, people who work as movers tend to be the type of folks you do not want to antagonize. Yet Gene claims he is going to go ahead and have them load the truck, then maybe not have the hundreds of dollars (what? that's a lot of money to move the contents of one apartment to an in-town storage space...) he needs to pay them?

And he claimed the same thing the last time he was evicted and had to subsequently rescue his humble belongings.

So, I feel confident he lies and misrepresents how much cash he has available, otherwise he couldn't make everything seem like such an immediate "give me money TODAY! oh, and tomorrow, too..." crisis. He did mention a "cash reserve" in a couple of his emails not so long ago. Want to bet some of the people who have donated to him over the years have no cash reserve of their own? But they probably have jobs.

This is a minor thing but - his wife had her surgery over three weeks ago. The hospital only kept her one night, which indicates to me they thought she was fine to go home. Yet Gene is still claiming she has suffered and needs bed rest. This is not out of the question, but I suspect it is just another attempt to play on people's kind hearts. (Again, I could be wrong - if the claim came from anyone but Gene I'd err on the side of believing them, but we know how dishonest he is.)

The Steinberg's have Gene and Barbara's Social Security income. They have whatever revenue everything associated with Gene's podcasts brings in (Gene tried to tell Black Angus the Paracast+ incoming alone is enough to make a living...). They have whatever Gene gets from Lyft and Uber when he can be bothered to drive (and has valid plates - how did he get recently acquire temporary tags without getting a new car, anyway...? or did he get a new car?). And they have whatever Gene sucks up in sucker money online.

I'm not saying they should be rich, but neither does it add up for me why they live in perpetual crisis. Gene moans he might be better off dead, laments he should be taking it easy at his age, but I just can't escape the feeling he and his wife have brought all this on themselves. You can find posts online going back years, years and years, where people are telling Gene to stop relying on the donations. He just told them off and kept going, and now here we are.

Anyway, sorry, TL;DR: I 100% agree something doesn't add up here at all, I think it's all about manipulating people to get cash out of them, but it could be Gene's thinking and priorities really are that disordered.
