I went to Disney World last year. My kid loved it, of course. But what I observed as an adult was eerily similar to the company towns that used to exist in the coalfields here. Disney controls a very large part of Florida, some 48 square miles, which is more than twice the size of Manhattan. Most of that is rural fields and swamps, and it is rather strange to drive through it and see nothing save for a very few gas stations and fast food places that is not part of Disney. My wife has a friend who has worked on and off for them for years. He says Disney is a very demanding employer, with fairly average pay and benefits. He says that they have really cut back on giving employees free park admission, which used to be a huge perk of working there. He also said that Disney has expensive company housing available for those who don't want to commute through the company wilderness every day.
