Are spheres of influence no longer a thing, geopolitically?

I not. Imagine the Russians doing this in Cuba. Again. If you have to ask yourself why something is happening the answer is almost always $$$$$. We'll find out eventually and as I've said, it's no coincidence that huge energy reserves have been found in region and those godless commies are huge energy suppliers. ( I know they're not godless commies so much anymore, but I do like the phrase.....)

Spheres of influence are still a thing but skilled diplomacy and professionalism in US foreign policy isn't anymore. Pandering to the media at home is all the rage.

Isn't this where we are supposed to go into the secret room under the White House and break the glass to reactivate the clones of Nixon and Kissinger they've had frozen all these years?

After crunching through the back stories concerning this Ukraine debacle it is clearly obvious to me the West is to blame here, the United States in particular...America has no true interest in Ukraine and NATO should not allow the Ukraine to be a member...The West is digging a grave in this pointless aggressive stance, yes I think the West are the aggressors in this case...Russia would never have massed its military at the Ukrainian border to begin with if the West had respected Russian sphere of influence...The West threw the first stones...

There's always another point of view. The US invaded Iraq and Afghanistan with little to show for it other than decades of death and destruction and debt. Outrage on our part is the pot calling the kettle black. Incompetent leadership in the US is why this is happening. I wonder what will happen in Taiwan over the next three years.

Word salad is not helpful. If anything says 'we are bumble****s' more clearly please tell me what it is. Normally I'd paste in the article but thinking about this gives me a giant pain in my ***.

Harris acknowledges 'real possibility of war' in Europe

Kamala Harris slammed for 'word salad' response to Ukraine-Russia questions

I understand that this is a long clip and that this source (Fox News) can be iffy, but this is important and worth the watch.

Please, watch this clip.

This analysis is from the wrong-headed standpoint that NATO expansion is right, and that what is needed is a further show of strength against Russia to cow Putin into submission. That is a very dangerous game to play, and it is for no gain, because there is no strategic interest for the US in Ukraine. Western aggression caused this situation, and what is needed instead is contrition.

Russian nation practically didn't exist till 19th century. There was just a huge mix of many Slav groups generally living west of Ural mountains that was constantly switching between autonomy and being colonised by somebody. Russia is actually an imperial idea, like United Kingdom. At opportune moment when Russians had huge technological edge over tribes in the Central Asia they went and conquered them all the way to the Pacific ocean. That's how Russia was born. From that hold on that wast empire then Russian national idea rose. Soviet Union didn't abandon that idea at all, actually it had striven to enlarge itself.

If you try to bring morality into foreign relations, the inevitable result is bloodshed. Deluded ideologues in the west have tried to bring Ukraine into the western fold because they believe it to be a moral good. This is the result. If these same people had been able to accept an amoral peace, then this situation would not have arisen.

I am so sick of this dick measuring bullshit being pulled (pun intended). Especially since it's all being done in our names.

Trudeau - The Canadian people want this...
Putin - The Russian people want this...
Biden - The American people want this...

I don't know a single person that wants any of this.

Morality :) I would rather call it a sales pitch.

"Democracy" is just distraction term used to cover up for what is actually "asset stripping". West will bribe local politicians to write new legislation which will enable western businesses to come in and take out anything of value. After that unemployment skyrockets. So much for "morality". After fall of Soviet Union this happened like clockwork in every East Block country. But obviously, you won't read about it in western media. Their job is to paper over the "asset stripping" part in the first place.

Russia troops attacking CHERNOBYL could set off radiation cloud across Europe, Ukraine warns as bomb hits ship owned by NATO-member Turkey in Black Sea and Kiev sends citizens to shelters ahead of 'imminent' bombing

Ukrainian border guards are 'vigorously' fighting Russian troops for control of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, 60 miles north of Kiev, amid fears the battle could damage nuclear storage facilities - creating a cloud of fallout that could blanket Europe. Meanwhile Turkey said one of its ships had been hit by a 'bomb' near the port of Odessa and was heading to Romania with damage. Turkey is a NATO member state, amid fears other nations could be quickly sucked into the fighting and spark an all-out war in Europe. Ukrainian forces were this afternoon fighting Russia in virtually every region of the country, including just 15 miles north of the capital at Antonov air base - with civilians told to rush to bomb shelters amid fears the Russians will bombard the city. Battles are also taking place in Luhansk and Donetsk in the east and around Kherson, the Dneiper River, and the port cities of Odessa and Mariupol in the south.
