Biden gives Poland the 'green light' to provide Ukraine with MiG fighter jets despite Russian warning it will be at WAR with any country hosting Kyiv's planes: Gen. Milley meets troops in Europe

Plans for Poland to send fighter jets to Ukraine have been given the 'green light' by the US amid warnings from Russia that countries hosting Kyiv's military aircraft could end up being involved in an armed conflict. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said today that the country was in talks with Poland in order to orchestrate a deal that would allow Polish fighter jets to be flown by pilots from the Ukrainian Air Force in order to combat Russia's air superiority. The deal would see Ukraine take Poland's 28 Russian-made MiG-29 warplanes, which would in turn be replaced by a fresh set of F-16's by the United States. Mr Blinken told CBS's Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan: 'That gets the green light. In fact, we're talking with our Polish friends right now about what we might be able to backfill their needs if in fact they choose to provide these fighter jets to the Ukrainians. What can we do? 'How can we help to make sure that they get something to backfill the planes that they're handing over to the Ukrainians?' It comes as Russia's Defense Ministry today warned countries, including NATO member Romania, against hosting Kyiv's military aircraft, saying they could end up being involved in an armed conflict. Defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a video briefing that some Ukrainian combat planes had redeployed to Romania and other Ukraine neighbors he did not identify. He warned that if those warplanes attacked the Russian forces from the territory of those nations, it 'could be considered as those countries' engagement in the military conflict'. Mr Konashenkov said: 'We know for sure that Ukrainian combat aircraft have flown to Romania and other neighboring countries.

The Poles have said no:

Poland Still Isn't Interested In Transferring Its MiG-29s To Ukraine

This deal would be a dangerous escalation of the conflict if it went ahead. The Poles also have other reasons for declining the offer made of their equipment to Ukraine by other countries and supranational bodies.

Putin's 'special military operation' has revealed that the Russians are not very good at waging war. A lot of stupid people on the internet are predicting that if Putin is successful in Ukraine he is going to continue westward into NATO territory. However, after the heavy losses suffered in this campaign, a conventional war waged further westward would require another lengthy build-up of troops, as his forces in the region are going to be utterly spent. Even if they could manage another months-long build-up without going bankrupt, I doubt that Russia's military would be particularly effective against modern NATO forces. Desert Storm this operation is not. The Russians are going into Ukraine without even GPS or night vision across the bulk of their forces. Putin has gone all-in on this one campaign against plucky little Ukraine, whose own forces are nowhere near on a par with NATO, and even then it is proving a struggle for Russia to prevail.

Thats simply warmongering, Russia won't attack NATO countries unless they are looking for mutually assured destruction...I doubt anyone wants that but seems some are egging it on regardless...

Russia's military - not to put too fine a point on it - stepped on their own ****. Capable of beating the snot out of poorly armed stationary targets but would probably be taken apart on short order. Lots of nifty hardware, they're excellent engineers but their problems are more organic.

Were it not for the nuclear threat they probably would be. A good reason to not want Iran to develop nuclear weapons - but right now that's exactly what is happening.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean that a refusal to declare a no-fly zone is appeasement of Russia?

Historically speaking 'letting them get away with it' never ends well and only encourages more - and that's probably exactly what will happen after they've had time to recover from this debacle. Were not for the nuclear threat then yes, I'd like to see the Russian forces get a taste of their own medicine. We wouldn't be bombing evacuations. If it had been a credible threat in the first place there wouldn't have been a 'special military operation.'

That said, this is their back yard and wish we'd just leave it to them: can't say that part of the world registers very high on my list of daily concerns. Ask the Bidens specifically, then Trump and Rex Tillertson why we have such an interest there. It isn't love of Ukrainian culture.

No I don't think a no-fly zone provoking a nation run by a dictator who has already made alarming statements about the use of nuclear weapons wise. The math is pretty clear on this and Hobson's choice means the Ukrainians pay the price.

Putin's invasion grinds to a halt: Kyiv claims to have destroyed dozens of Russian helicopters overnight, retaken a city, and killed 11,000 troops while Russians have captured no significant territory sparking hopes Ukraine could win the war

Russian forces resumed shelling major Ukrainian cities today, but have captured no significant territory after a weekend of heavy fighting with Kyiv claiming to have inflicted punishing losses. Thirty Russian helicopters moved to an airfield near the captured city of Kherson were destroyed overnight, Ukraine's military said, while also claiming to have re-taken the city of Chuhuiv, near Kharkiv, in the early hours - killing Russian commanders Lt. Col. Dmitry Safronov, and Lt Col. Denis Glebov in the process.

Kyiv now says more than 11,000 Russian forces have died fighting, losses that experts say are 'slowly becoming unsustainable for Russia'. All of which has sparked hopes - however faint - that the unlikeliest of victories could be on the cards for Ukraine. Asked by the BBC on Sunday whether victory for Putin's men was 'inevitable' - as many had predicted before fighting started - UK general Admiral Sir Tony Radakin replied: 'No.'

Russia has set terms for the cessation of its 'special military operation':

Russia has set out its demands to end the conflict in Ukraine for the first time

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters that Russia had told Ukraine it was ready to halt its military action "in a moment" if Kyiv met its conditions.

The demands include:

  • Ceasing all military action
  • A change to the constitution to enshrine neutrality
  • Acknowledgement of Crimea as Russian territory
  • Recognition of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent
It is the most explicit Russian statement so far of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its "special military operation".

I am sure they will also stipulate the permanent re-opening of the North Crimea Canal in any agreement.

I should have been more clear, I was referring to the 1980's when they were fighting the Soviets. The Afghans figured out the weak spots on the gigantic MiL-24 helicopter, lured them close to the ground, and downed them with accurate fire from Bren copies.

Afghanistan has forbidding geographical features. Does the Ukraine have anything like that? It's largely urbanized, isn't it?
