But you have to remember you are an incredibly well educated person, with a great knowledge of history. Do you think most folks think that deep. What is the majority here, folks like you, or just simple folks respecting what they believe is their flag

That's a good point.....lately I've had to tell some of them that Robert E. Lee fought for the confederacy, that General Sherman was dead and that the south fired on Fort Sumter. I guess they are just believing what they've been told over the years through family stories.

I was also told that these monuments of people like Lee, Davis, and Jackson were objects of worship and veneration.....and it is really looking that way.

I have lived in the Ballarat area for almost all of my life (55 years) I see the Eureka flag as mine. Well, my towns, my history. Yet, I can only tell you a rough outline of the Eureka uprising which is where it was made. But I am mighty pissed off that some Sydney racists used my flag for there racist bullshit.

As I understand it, most folks in the US are incredibly and justifiably patriotic to your flag. But how many citizens could tell you with any accuracy who designed it where it started, how it evolved. And really, does any of that really matter.
On patriotic days it is a proud symbol to stand and salute, on sad days it is a symbol to remember those that have given there lives in your countries defense. Like every country, The US has skeletons in the closet that they are less then proud of. Why destroy or taint your flag for those times.
I suspect it is a symbol off belonging. Even more than allegiance.

Well said.....I know full well that the US has many skeletons in her closet.....and is likely not yet done creating them. Its likely the same with every country in the world past or present.

No it really doesn't matter how it evolved......but bear in mind the "confederate" flag everyone is up in arms about is not a US flag. It was also not the confederate national flag......only part of the second and third versions.

The white supremacists got a hold of the confederate flag and turned it into a symbol of hate just as the nazis did with the swastika. I guess your flag too. I'm your age and have been a civil war re-enactor half my life.....I honor the bravery and sacrifice of both sides. However, I do not agree with the southern cause of slavery. I really wish a way could be found to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the southern soldiers.....and only that. I think only in teaching history and preserving our battlefield can we really honor both sides.

The far left are no better than the far right in my opinion all this demonstrating with face masks pulling down statues, hating on the police etc, like Dundee said put the statues near a library and let generations learn, about history bury history and no good can come of it.

But dare to say anything other than what they think and you're a bigot and a racist, debate without violence is a thing of the past these days.

First post in some time so be gentle..lol

Good to see you again......actually I was called a race traitor.....hasn't gotten to racist yet.

Putting the monuments near libraries would be a good idea.....maybe then people would actually go into the libraries to actually learn.

Or the way things are going the libraries might get burned down...

I am uneasy about these statues being removed.

While I disagree for what the statues and monuments stand for, personally I feel as if it is a case of hiding history.

They have been up for years, why now have they become a problem?

I already worry that society in general is becoming historically ignorant.

Take for example when I was on the train to London the other month. A group of girls were gossiping and one made a joke about nucleur War. Hiroshima was brought up and one of the girls turned and said what is Hiroshima? Some sort of flower?

Also on a different occaions I have heard myself the classic line on who is Churchill? To which the reply was the dog of that insurance advert....

Long and short of it, is that by removing these statues, history I feel is being hidden....

Good or bad history is history, can't hide it just makes more people want to know why you want to hide it and then that can turn to resentment As was said earlier by Toroid(I believe) Americas founding fathers owned slaves you can't just redact all history..to make it Unicorns and rainbows.

Yes some of the founding fathers owned slaves......and it had been in the colonies for 160 years by the time of the revolution. However, the US wasn't founded with slavery as their cornerstone as the confederacy based on white supremacy.

I also don't see it as hiding, rewriting or erasing history.......based on the level of historical knowledge....(which is poor...read some of the thing I had to tell people earlier).....the monuments are not helping at all.

People can only learn about the civil war by reading first person accounts, regimental and brigade histories and personal memoirs to name a few. Then go to the battlefields to learn what the regiments did and walk or camp in their footsteps.

The thing people seem to have forgotten is that the left wing and the right wing belong to the same bird.

Where do you draw the line though?

Should Confederate soldiers graves be dug up and destroyed?

They are monuments in themselves...

In a way yes they are.....but they were the common soldier. I don't think taking them down will help....simply because people do not know where to draw the line.

I've known for many years that the knowledge in history was quite lacking. Both sides of this event need to take a deep breath because violence helps no one.

Good job people, good posts with good thoughts on this issue.

Again, consolidation of federal power and the further elimination of what little remains of state power and the tiny amount of control over the laws in states by local communities. Thus creating an American Politburo with absolute authority over all in the hands of few.

Secondary, this is about the on-going destruction of freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom to be who you are, what you are, and this is being accomplished by falsely linking the Battle Flage of Ole Virginia with Nazi'sm and with Hate. If you're white, if you're a Southerner, if you oppose this; then you're a Nazi and White Supremacist....right?

This is about the destruction of America by making a association with the flag of the South an icon which people will associate with those evils. This weakens America. It doesn't help it.

"When you want to overthrow a civilization what you do is hijack the meaning of key words."
John Taylor Gatto

It isn't accidental that the images you've seen on the mind controlling news media, aka public enemies number 1, are showing you paid actors posing as neo-nazi's,...like they ae just everywhere huh? All holding Swastika's and the Confederate Flag?

It's a false flag magic act. Once this is accomplished, then in another 5 or ten years the politburo will make possession or display of these items illegal. Just like the criminals in Germany have done with their own history.

Got a confederate flag on your bumper? Now you're a criminal. This is about instilling fear, crushing signs of opposition, and ultimately about establishing a ruling elite through corrupted political stooges, most of whom are pedophiles.

Actually a lot of them write like they have already burned down their library and all the books too.
I know the Irony of typing this online but a lot of this unrest is the fault of social media, people wanting to post pictures to show their online friends that they were there the look at me syndrome, I mean half the crap they protest has no real basis in fact like the targeting of police, and making out a few bad police/decisions. means all the police are bad, and we need to protest, they being the far left PC brigade are getting out of control.
