Average cost of a used Tesla tumbles more than $1,000 in first half of January - as Hertz 'fire sale' floods market with hundreds of Model 3s renters didn't want to hire

The value of a used Tesla fell by more than $1,000 on average in the first half of January, new figures show.

Between January 1 and 18, the average list price of a Tesla fell from $36,410 to $35,370, according to data from used car platform CarGurus.

Over that same period the company's share price also fell by more than 15 percent.

Adding fuel to the fire, last week Hertz revealed in a company filing it would sell off tens of thousands of its electric cars in a 'fire sale'.

Analysts have suggested the surge in supply of heavily discounted Teslas is likely to reverberate across the already struggling and relatively small second-hand market.

Last week, it also emerged Tesla has been dumped by another rental giant Sixt - who will instead will buy 250,000 Jeeps, Chryslers and Dodges. It is no clear if Sixt will also be selling the old Teslas.

Rental firms blame low demand for EVs from customers who don't want the hassle of finding charging stations on road trips and worry about range.

While the value of used EVs from all manufacturers is falling, Teslas are being hit the hardest.

In September, the typical list price of a pre-owned Tesla sank below the cost of the average EV for the first time, CarGurus said.

Used EVs have dropped 22 percent between October 2022 and October 2023 while the overall used car market dropped only 3 percent.

'EV prices on the whole have been declining quite significantly over the past year to year and a half at this point,' said CarGurus Director of Industry Analytics Kevin Roberts.

Elon Musk is nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by Norwegian MP who praises him for being a 'stout proponent of free speech' and 'enabling' Ukraine to communicate after Russia's invasion

Elon Musk has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as a 'stout proponent for free speech', joining conservationists, journalists, religious leaders and political activists in an exclusive group of the world's foremost actors for change.

Marius Nilsen, MP for Norway's libertarian Progress Party, claimed to have put forward the X owner and Tesla founder for his 'adamant defense of dialogue, free speech and [enabling] the possibility to express one's views' in a 'continuously more polarized world'.

Nilsen also credited Musk's satellite internet constellation Starlink, operated by SpaceX, in his decision, noting its use in Ukraine for resistance fighters to 'communicate, coordinate and withstand the attack from Russia' as the war rages on.

Last week, Starlink won a license for similar use in Israel and parts of Gaza, with timely and diverse information from the conflict zone proving evermore challenging to gather.

'The multitude of tech companies Musk has founded, owns or runs, aimed at bettering societies, increasing knowledge of both earth and space, in addition to enabling communication and connectivity globally... has helped make the world a more connected and safer place,' Nilsen said.

The award accepts nominations from anyone who falls within certain criteria, including work in academia or government - and past recipients of prizes. A shortlist will then be drawn together through March before judges review the nominees for announcement in October.

Elon Musk's secret $1.8 BILLION contract with the US government: SpaceX is expanding a shadowy satellite program called Starshield used by the Pentagon as controversial X boss cements his role as a major national security partner

Elon Musk's SpaceX is expanding a secretive satellite program called Starshield used by the Pentagon as it quietly forges deeper links with U.S. intelligence and military agencies.

The company secured a significant classified contract worth a staggering $1.8 billion with the U.S. government in 2021, emphasizing its increasing role as a vital national security partner, documents obtained by the Wall Street Journal revealed.

The collaboration signals a deepening connection between SpaceX, the leading company in the space industry, and the national security establishment.

Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president, highlighted the cooperation between the intelligence community and the company at a May 2023 event. 'When I'm never sure what I can say in a public forum, I tend to zip it. But I can say that there is very good collaboration between the intelligence community and SpaceX,' Shotwell said.

Little is known about Starshield - the program tailored for government clients and led by a former Air Force general - which received a $70 million military award last August for providing communication services to numerous Pentagon partners. However, the group has largely operated out of the public eye.

Elon Musk sues OpenAI founder for ‘betrayal’ of company’s values

Tesla billionaire accuses Sam Altman of deprioritising safety to pursue profits

Elon Musk is suing the co-founder of the ChatGPT developer OpenAI, alleging he compromised the company’s original pursuit to prioritise developing safe artificial intelligence (AI) over profits.
The Tesla billionaire accused Sam Altman of “stark betrayal” after the pair co-founded OpenAI in 2015, with Mr Musk agreeing to bankroll the group with the intention of developing AI that would benefit humanity.
The business was set up as a non-profit and shared details of its AI breakthroughs with other scientists.
However, in a lawsuit filed in California, Mr Musk claimed Mr Altman, who is chief executive of OpenAI, has since plotted to “radically depart from their mission”, raising billions of dollars from Microsoft and making OpenAI’s research a secret.
