I also got this just before the general email. Again Gene first states he needs more money to pay the motel. In the general email the crisis was much less dire:

is this where he is staying?I think the motels will raise rates around Spring Training. So I sometimes wonder what is keeping Gene in Mesa or Phoenix for further lonely holidays. It probably is not the friends he has made while eating at the Senior Center.

As far as I know he is in Mesa, but Yuma seems a bit more affordable
New Year's Day Emergency!
Hello,
I’ll be brief.
It’s New Year’s Day and it's a barrel of hurt.
The mobile phone service is turned off for non-payment.
That means I cannot drive for Lyft or Uber until I have a working smartphone for navigation.
I have to pay the motel today by 11 AM (Arizona/Mountain time) to stay here.
Can you provide some help today?

new year new plot line.Today's garbage is even lazier than usual:
Translation - I'll be lazy.I’ll be brief.
Translation - I need to get to the sales and I need more money to buy crap I don't need. It’s New Year’s Day and it's a barrel of hurt.
Translation - The mobile service is not "turned off" they would just cut you off for repeated non-payment but I need to fake an emergency. Doesn't matter that mobile phone carriers don't work this way because I think you people are too stupid to realise that. The mobile phone service is turned off for non-payment.
Translation - You all know I don't drive for Uber or Lyft but I need to keep the charade going in case some really gullible people are listening. Also the whole fake phone being "turned off" thing gives me an extra excuse for why I'm not driving. That means I cannot drive for Lyft or Uber until I have a working smartphone for navigation.
Translation - Will you pay for my splurge on the New Year sales? Can you provide some help today?
Freudian typo slip. He's giving us a "f*** you".f you can please follow the usual process:
I would still drive if I didn't have my cell phone, surely he knows his way around the town he lives in enough but one never knows, he could really suck at directions and street names...Either way he is just a pathetic fool...
...
I think the bigger problem would be that you need the Uber or Lyft app to accept fares - and you can't do that without a phone.
If "tech expert" Crimeberg were really driving he would understand but this is just more concrete proof he doesn't do any ride sharing - and that he has absolutely no knowledge of modern technology.
There is absolutely no way he could be ignorant of that if the ride sharing were true.
It might have been more accurate if the "for navigation" was either left out or expanded. When we are out of cell range, navigating with free offline routing apps work just fine but his essential point that he cannot drive for Uber or Lyft without a working cell phone is true.
He could use the Uber app and any app on his phone if he uses a Wi-Fi hotspot like whats available at his motel or at McDonalds...
...
No the apps require you to be online during the journey. Obviously if you have brief cuts in connectivity it doesn't matter but the way the apps work is that you need to be connected to their servers. It's how they provide up to date info to the customer about arrival, journey length and that the journey has been completed and paid for. Couldn't work with wifi.
Ah yeah that makes sense, I didn't think about having to use it whilst he drove..I wonder how that works for other states that do not allow cell phone use while driving, like New York for instance...I drove around Buffalo N.Y. for almost a month using my cell phone while driving, talking and using Google maps only to find out I was lucky I didn't get pulled over lol...I stopped at a Starbucks one day near downtown Buffalo and when I got out of my car someone came over to me and warned me about having my cell phone out talking while I was driving...I bought him a drink for letting me know lol...
...
So just having it out even if you don't use it could get you in trouble? Also how does that work for hands free in the car? I think a lot of these laws are not keeping up with the tech.
