OMG, can people please just stop with the fucking 2020 election stuff? The time has passed, and the GOP is probably going to win big this fall anyway. Politics is a dirty game, just accept that fact and move on.

With Biden's state of the union speech coming, I am looking forward to him speaking about this defunding the police movement...His far left party members in Congress need to stop pushing this idealism, crime as skyrocketed because of this, at least partially, and hopefully his speech will finally kill this train wreck of an idea...

State of the Union: Biden to speak against defunding police amid violent crime surge

Twenty-five minutes into his speech, Biden is stumbling his words with random cringe comments...He started out good, right on point but it didn't last long...Biden also claimed that last year he created more jobs than any other time in American history, I don't know if that is factual or not, although I lean towards the latter...I liked his speech until he went into the Ukraine/Russia, and as far as inflation is concerned, basically he demanded the corporations to lower their prices to the consumer and pay people more money per hour...I guess he thinks it will magically happen...

Manchin sits with Republicans during State of the Union

3bb1a0a56fa71e822f59893da06d2741

Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, opted to sit on the Republicans' side of the House chamber during President Biden's first State of the Union address.

Why it matters: Manchin has been outspoken in recent days against what he has branded “hypocritical” policies on energy imports pursued by the Biden administration. N0netheless, he stood repeatedly with his fellow Democrats to applaud policies outlined by the president.

  • "While Americans decry what is happening in Ukraine, the United States continues to allow the import of more than half a million barrels per day of crude oil and other petroleum products from Russia during this time of war," Manchin said this week.
  • Manchin also reportedly did not stand with his fellow Democrats when the president spoke about an expanded child tax credit, a policy over which the senator has expressed serious qualms.
The details: Manchin was seen sitting between Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.). He was the only Democrat seen sitting with Republicans.
  • “Sen. Manchin sat with his colleague Sen. Romney to remind the American people and the world that bipartisanship works and is alive and well in the U.S. Senate," Manchin spokesman Sam Runyon told Axios.

Joe Manchin is part of a rapidly disappearing species, the conservative rural Democrat. My dad finally switched to Republican last year. He said "I didn't abandon the Democrats, they abandoned me." My grandfather was a New Dealer as a young man and the donkey could never do any wrong in his mind. However, not long before he died he admitted that Mike Huckabee was the presidential candidate he liked the most.

We're not quite an Idiocracy, but presidential speeches are getting dumber

The cult film Idiocracy (2006) imagines a future in which Americans' mental capacities have been degraded by generations of pop culture, junk food, and–how to put this delicately–unselective breeding. The result is that Joe Bauers, an ordinary 21st century man frozen in a cryogenic experiment, awakens to find himself the smartest person in the world.

After discovery by the authorities, Bauers is introduced to the public by "President of Uhmerica" Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho at the 2505 State of the Union address. Camacho's speech isn't fit to quote in a family publication. But it's a very funny satire of political rhetoric in a dumbed-down society.

Things aren't quite that bad yet. But a new study by researchers at the University of Montana suggests we're well on our way. Their analysis of presidential rhetoric over the last 50 years, shows that both Joe Biden and Donald Trump use less complex language than their predecessors. Although the Montana scholars used a different measure of complexity, their result is consistent with other findings that show the declining sophistication of presidential speeches.

Part of the explanation may be specific to the most recent presidents. Trump and Biden are among the oldest presidents to take office and arguably both show signs of cognitive decline. In most respects, though, their use of language was consistent with a long-term trend that includes both Democrats and Republicans. Since the 1940s, presidential speeches have tended to hover around a middle-school level of comprehension.

You can argue that's a good thing. The declining complexity of presidential rhetoric is correlated with an expanded electorate that can be addressed directly using broadcast media. The long, ornate speeches of the past weren't necessarily superior, either. We remember Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which contains fewer than 275 words (there are discrepancies between various manuscripts and contemporary newspaper accounts), better than the two-hour stemwinder by Massachusetts politician Edward Everett, that was the headline event of the day.

Still, there's a significant, if not unqualified, relation between complexity of language and complexity of thought. The example of Lincoln's profound simplicity does not excuse the banality and vulgarity of more recent presidents.

In Idiocracy, Camacho punctuates his State of the Union with songs, dances, and blasts from an assault rifle. He may not be the smartest president, but at least he knows his audience.

She was 11 when WWI started, 36 when WWII started, 74 when Star Wars released and 116 when Covid-19 started. At 119 she may witness WWIII! Her name is Kane Tanaka as the world’s oldest living person. She was born on January 2, 1903.

What about the fraction of Americans who speak English as a second language? Could that be a factor?

She'll probably win unless there is a stronger Republican challenger. Being a part of the Trump administration would definitely count in her favor just like an Obama affiliation would help you in Chicago.

So are the American elections all about people who live in big cities vs people who live in provinces?

Yeah, war in Ukraine is blessing for America, isn't it? You stopped fighting each other :) plus Trump started looking bad, which is bonus.

Pretty much.

And no, we are still fighting each other. Unfortunately, with gas prices and inflation on the rise, Biden is doing a really good job of making Trump look less bad.

This idiot for a president can start with drilling our own oil and operate the pipelines he shut down...We had energy independence with Trump and gasoline was affordable and plentiful...

Biden refuses to ban Russian oil despite Nancy Pelosi telling him to: President's staffers kick press out of Cabinet meeting when they asked about issue as Psaki says it would lead to higher gas prices

The White House does not support a ban on Russian oil imports, according to press secretary Jen Psaki, despite even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi joining in on the calls for the U.S. to cease buying Moscow's fuel. 'We don't have a strategic interest in reducing the global supply of energy, and that would raise prices at the gas pump for the American people,' Psaki told reporters Thursday. Asked what would need to happen 'on the ground' in Ukraine for the U.S. to stop buying Russian oil, the press secretary demurred. 'I don't know if we look at it exactly through that prism. Obviously we have not held back in taking significant, historic steps that are crippling the Russian economy right now,' she said.
