Images of mysterious large-headed humanoids found on a rock in Tanzania

During excavations in Tanzania, Polish archaeologists have discovered many rock paintings depicting buffaloes, little men and figures of very long and large-headed humanoids. In Tanzania, ancient rock carvings have been discovered, presumably created by the Sandaw people . Sandavas are a group of local tribes that have lived in these places for about 87 thousand years. The figures show figures of various animals, mainly buffaloes, but scientists were especially impressed by the images of humanoid creatures.

There are a lot of ordinary images of people, and all of them are depicted quite standard – an elongated thin body, legs and arms, a large head. But next to them are depicted humanoid creatures, depicted as real giants among men. Their bodies are much more elongated and their heads are several times larger. The discovery was made by a team of archaeologists from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland). They accidentally discovered drawings on a piece of rock near the place where they were excavating. Dating the drawings proved to be difficult until it was stated that they were at least several hundred years old.

The good preservation is due to the fact that this part of the rock is mainly in the shade and the sun did not burn out the coloring material. Polish scientists suggest that huge large-headed people are an attempt to depict anthropomorphic (humanoid) buffaloes and that huge heads are buffalo hair and horns. But what is interesting, such drawings of large-headed humanoids were found all over the world, and often where there are no buffaloes at all. Just a coincidence?

Nearly identical petroglyphs discovered in Japan, Utah, and Azerbaijan prompt intriguing inquiries into the connections between ancient cultures. Despite being separated by extensive geographical distances, their presence in disparate locations raises questions about potential cultural interactions or shared symbolism. The dating for these petroglyphs indicates significant historical value: approximately 7,000 years in Japan, between 1,000 and 2,000 years in Utah, and up to 10,000 years in Azerbaijan.

Feature representations of winged or flying human figures. These carvings, located in Fugoppe Cave in Japan, Nine Mile Canyon in Utah, and Gobustan in Azerbaijan.

Horseshoe Canyon rock art, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

The Great Gallery is the best-known pictograph panel in Horseshoe Canyon, with well-preserved, life-sized figures (minus limbs) forming some of the most significant rock markings in North America. While they're characteristic of the Barrier Canyon style (2000 BC to AD 500), their exact dates remain unknown. Initially they were thought to be 2,000 to 4,000 years old, but a 2016 study suggested that they were between 900 and 2,000 years old. The age of the significant rock art remains subject to debate.

Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site, Pickens, South Carolina

For hundreds or maybe thousands of years, the Hagood Creek Petroglyphs lay hidden beneath a dirt road, before being excavated in 2003. Thought to be 1,000 to 2,000 years old, the 32 distinct petroglyphs show 18 human and several abstract images. Experts haven't been able to pinpoint a specific era or decipher exactly what the carvings were trying to communicate. They are on display at the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site.

Hemet Maze Stone, Reinhardt Canyon, California

This curious petroglyph is made of interconnected shapes that form a pattern of mazes. The symbol has been used in Indigenous American and Asian art for millennia, yet it’s still not known exactly who made the abstract drawing or when. Over the years, the petroglyph has been attributed to Chinese Buddhist monks and shipwrecked sailors. However, the prevailing theory suggests it was the work of Indigenous Californian artists, as it’s similar to the Rancho Bernardo style found in other rock art in Southern California.
