Well, the Russians might have picked up a thing or 2 from what happened here Operation Ivy Bells - Wikipedia

But light fibers are hard to eavesdrop on unless you physically split them, or somehow tap into the many IC laser amplifiers attached
alongside the undersea cables..

I would say that Russia may be learning something from the Chinese but they don't trust China...

How do you mean ? :smile2:

On the surface things may seem peachy but there are distinct divisions...

Mistrust Sets Low Ceiling for Russia-China Partnership: Deconstructing the Putin-Xi Jinping Relationship

No amount of propaganda can hide the fact that the Russian-Chinese partnership is not progressing well.

It is precisely in the political sphere that the incompatibility between the two is most profound. It is shaped by sharply dissimilar motivations and aspirations among the elites rooted in a gulf between their respective political cultures—a disconnect accentuated by reshuffles initiated by two leaders facing vastly different domestic challenges.

A misunderstanding of each other’s responses to these challenges generates a lack of trust, constituting a greater hindrance to upgrading the bilateral partnership than economic setbacks.

I know not to trust chinese networking gear such as Huawei. But on the other hand 3 letter agencies have
full access to all internet traffic and well known desktop and smartphone OSes,, so what to do ??

They could be planting bugs on the cables like China was allegedly doing during the end of the cold war...

If any signals go into the air it can be tapped...There's high power satellites that can grab your cell phone call or text message or monitor your data usage when online with your phone...

Yup, I've heard that the U.S has such capabilities, to basically detect and pin-point any RF transmitter anywhere in the world,, like your CB or HAM radio, not just phones..

I think China and Australia can do that too...Australia got technological help from the Americans to counter China...A game of chess...

Can they monitor the undersea cables by satellite ?

If something on the cables broadcast a signal then maybe, but any broadcast would give a location and opportunity for anyone else to intercept that signal...
