Don't know if folks agree with Nick Redfern's comments below about flying black triangles not being 'secret aircraft' but there does appear to be quite a lot of FBT sightings which go way back before the 80s/90s and there's also relevant info about National Archives research and British MOD documents declassified under the 'thirty years ruling'.

Given that they exist then suppose the idea that flying triangular objects are man made is a colossal conspiracy within itself but suppose it's also fair to say that after all these years the identity of the agency behind it all still remains a complete mystery and the tech involved still hasn't been displayed in any military arena by any government that we know of today.

Flying Triangles: Not “Secret Aircraft”

I recently had an interesting debate with a fellow researcher of the UFO phenomenon, on the topic of that one particular type of UFO that has become known as the “Flying Triangle.” When the conversation got going, it didn’t take long before I was assured that (in words broadly like the following): “They’re just military aircraft, and still classified. But one day they will be unveiled for us all to see – just like what happened with the Stealth fighter and the Stealth bomber.” Frankly, I get tired of people assuming – often without doing any deep research – that the FTs are domestic in origin. The reason why they reach that conclusion is actually very simple. There seems to be an assumption on the part of many in Ufology that the Triangles are phenomena that have only been seen since the 1980s onwards. Or, at the very earliest, the late 70s. Now, if that was the case, then yes, of course, an argument could be made that these craft are (a) ours; (b) still-classified; and (c) far in advance of the aforementioned Stealth aircraft. Unfortunately for those who prefer to see the Flying Triangles as vehicles of the military and nothing else, there is a major problem: reports of craft identical to those seen today date back more than sixty years. The issue here is that the “Flying Triangles are ours and ours alone” meme is one that has been fully embraced by lazy souls who simply will not look at the bigger, historical picture. If they did, their views might change – and change significantly, too.

Turns out that, like other shaped UFOs, FBT reports are also global in nature and there's been quite a number of remarkable sightings from other countries - also some interesting government documents out there and specific research conducted below from places like Argentina (where apparently they're 'nothing new').

Controversial Flying Triangles.

These flying devices are nothing new in the domestic case histories, and therefore, worldwide ones as well. Their true origin has been, and remains, the cause of major debate in UFO forums. It is an overwhelming phenomenon to someone like Diego, not versed in the subject and caught unawares. The first case involving a flying triangle over Argentina can be dated, according to our exclusive UFO database - which holds information on 5500 cases starting in 1947 - to the year night 1958 in Mendoza, when 'a strange black aircraft' was seen descending in the vicinity of the El Plumerillo Airport. Since then, we have been able to earmark some very interesting characteristics, as follows: - One hundred thirty reports of triangular, boomerang-shaped, flying wing or arrowhead-shaped objects fill our dossier. - They are mostly large in size; - Their color is predominantly black; - 95% of their incursions are nocturnal; - Their movements are variable, as we have description of slow, moderate, swift and even supersonic flight. - 70% of their manifestations occurred in absolute silence. No noise, buzzing or rumbling was heard at all. - The duration of their flight is not extensive. Their transit is short-to-medium in the travel that has been observed. - A slight number of episodes hint at landings or near-landings by these craft. - 95% of the evens suggest that these triangles fly alone. From the 1950s to the 1980s, we only have 17 reports. The massive increase occurs in the 1990s, with 21 reported sightings. During the first decade of the 21st century, the investigated cases totaled 36 and the maximum increase, up to now, was in the 2010s, with the uncanny number of 51 reports. In this newly-commenced decade, we are starting to receive the first episodes of these mysterious devices that fly over our heads with impunity.

Despite triangular UFO flight behaviour being described as silent, nocturnal and low altitude, witnesses also describe the objects as being capable of extremely rapid acceleration and sharp turns at high speed

They also (are reported to) have some other bizarre characteristics like 'blunt-end-forward' movement, detachable lights/objects and the generation of 'light beams' and electromagnetic effects.

Researcher David Marler has done some sterling work on the FBT subject and after a long time spent rummaging through various newsclipping archives and UFO report databases he presents his findings below - great watch.

Since the early to mid-1980s, there have been an ever-increasing number of UFO reports involving triangular-shaped objects. To many people this seemed like a new development in the field of UFOlogy. Indeed, the majority of UFO sightings that have been documented over the last 50+ years involved a multitude of shapes, sizes, and colors. In comparison to other UFO shapes reported, triangular objects were a relative minority. Marler was amazed to find numerous cases worldwide spanning the last 60+ years that involved triangular-shaped UFOs. He felt it was important to share this material, since many people were dismissing this particular subset of UFO reports as secret military aircraft. These same individuals are erroneously implying that these craft are something relatively new in our skies. He has established that reports of these objects are nothing new and that similar objects have been reported worldwide at least as far back as 1936. Thought all of Bob Pratt's UFO research had been removed from the internet but apparently not - below is a nice collection of 'flying triangle' reports from around the globe collated from news sources, CUFOS / MUFON archives and personal interviews.

This is a collection of nearly two hundred sightings of triangular, diamond or boomerang-shaped objects that I put together in 1990 in cooperation with the Belgian UFO research group SOBEPS. For some years I had believed that huge triangular UFOs were being seen rather often in the United States and other countries, but it was only when the Belgian flap occurred that I decided to see how many other cases I could find. The result was the list below. The majority of the reports are from newspaper stories, most of them printed in the UFO Newsclipping Service. I also found a number of triangular reports in newspaper stories published in South America that were translated and passed on to me by Jane Thomas Guma. Jane, then living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and now living in Glendale, Arizona, shared this information with a number of other researchers in the United States as well. Other sources for the reports below include the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), and my own investigations (Pratt). In this list, if the country is not given, the incident occurred in the United States. In American sightings, references to “football field" size means roughly 140 yards in length and about 70 in width (the playing field is actually 100 yards long and 53 wide, but end zones and sidelines are included in this description.) This compilation is not meant to be a record of all triangular sightings during these years. No one knows how many there have been. This list is offered only as an indication of what has been happening. It is very possible that many more such sightings were made that were not reported to the publications and organizations that were available to me.

Apparently Bob was initially sceptical but came to 'believe in UFOs' after interviewing over 60 witnesses in one week - since then he travelled across the U.S. and Canada and to countries like Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico, Peru, Uruguay, Japan and the Philippines interviewing over 2000 UFO witnesses (he went to Brazil 14 times and concluded that UFO encounters there were 'often more hostile and harmful than anywhere else in the world').

Not all triangle reports appear to describe similar appearance either - this one was said to have a big hole in it.

Jacksonville / Atlantic Ocean - October 27th, 1967 Suddenly, a soft green light was all over our cockpit. At the very instant of collision, ...the craft made an unbanked 180 degree turn, remained ahead for a few seconds and then took off and disappeared like a flash bulb. At least two of the witnesses agreed that the huge object was a gray equilateral triangle, each side at least 200 feet long and twenty feet thick. Its outer edges were very smooth and sharply defined (with no rivets, doors, antennae, windows, etc.) while at its center there was a triangular-shaped opening or hole large enough to fly through. It flew with one side directly forward

Excellent thread Karl, I do not think Nick Redfern's theory accurately explains away these type of craft...I seriously doubt any military force on earth has ships or space craft of this nature, so to me Nick's theory is dismissing a lot of data rather than supporting it...

Ha no worries mate and it certainly is a bit of a mystery wherever these objects are from - although there does seem to be lots of different types have lost count of how many times they've been described as having 'three white lights on each end with a red light in the middle'.

Don't suppose you can make a thread like this without mentioning Belgium in the late 80's / early 90's and there's a pretty rare 'Unsolved Mysteries' programme below (rare because it keeps on being taken down) containing some pretty compelling eyewitness testimony.

Another awesome thread Karl, on a subject that always seem to prove divisive in this ufological genre... inasmuch as no matter how many old, or even ancient cases that you present [for instance I always mention the fact that the 1952 Operation Mainbrace UFO was a 1500mph triangular craft, and sometimes even older reports] there are a plethora of replies coming that it was probably a secret airforce test vehicle! ... Amazing really... [70 years ago, we had 1500mph triangles in our fleet?] ... I noticed in your second clip that the man is doing lower steepling with his hands, in body language that usually means its a gesture done by those who feel confident about what’s going on. Have been meaning to get back to this thread mate (crazy times at the mo) - couldn't agree more about old Rosita and quite a number of UFO witness interviews out there in which they sound extremely sincere (and extremely confused) about what they've experienced - either that or they deserve an oscar.

There's a relevant phone call below to Bob Gribble from an CIA reconnaissance pilot (name given) whilst he was manning the NUFORC hotline - a very close range description and, although the transcript is linked, it's well worth listening to the man's voice - pretty freaky stuff.

Naval Intelligence pilot flying reconnaissance for CIA, encounters a large triangular craft that paces his F4-11 Phantom for approximately a half-hour. Object was dark in color with no protrusions, lights or outward propulsion system and its surface appearance like foam rubber. Target pasted solidly on plane's radar. Plane was in excess of Mach 2.2 and the object stayed within 50 feet off the left wing of the aircraft.

Delta/Boomerang rather than Triangle but thought this 1989 account from Miami International Airport also deserved a mention.

Another famous case is from 1989 at the Miami International Airport. Two flights nearly collided with this boomerang-shaped aircraft hovering over the tarmac and all the ground personnel, the traffic operators, pilots and all these witnesses never talked about because the tower manager told everybody to keep their mouths shut.

• U.S. Coastguard report of a UFO releasing FBTs.

"Be advised the object appears to be landing on the lake...There are other objects moving around it. Be advised these smaller objects are going at high rates of speed."

• During the 2009 UFO flap across the East Yorkshire Wolds residents reported 'spaceships over the sea' at Wilsthorpe on September 15th.

Multiple boomerang shaped objects reported over the bay 'ighting the sea up' and causing the surface to resemble 'a boiling pan of water'.

Another notable feature of many cases is the sudden unusual silence and an overwhelming feeling of isolation in the proximity of a UFO. Many people have noted that normal sounds—birds, insects, traffic—suddenly stop just before and during a close UFO sighting.

A man from Wisconsin reported that he had observed a UFO hovering over the treetops directly over his head once while deer hunting. He stated that the day had been windy and the trees were swaying and creaking pretty loudly in the breeze. What made him look up was the fact that all of a sudden the forest went “completely dead.”

He noted that the trees had stopped moving as if “frozen in place.” That is when he noticed a strange, dark, triangle-shaped object floating over the trees.

“It was a little bigger than a pickup truck and was solid black. I didn’t see any lights or hear any kind of sound from it.”

The hunter reported feeling like he was “looking up through a tunnel with me at the bottom and the UFO at the top. I knew that I was completely alone and that no one could help me.”

As soon as the UFO passed overhead the forest returned to normal.

The experience of such unusual sensations around a UFO has been dubbed “the Oz Effect” by UFO researcher and author Jenny Randles, and may indicate that there could be a field of influence that is being emitted around a UFO. Anyone close enough to a UFO would find himself completely contained within this field. The odd effects noticed by eyewitnesses could give us some kind of indication of the true nature of these energy fields.

• Researcher Jorge Martin describes how U.S. Jet Fighters disappeared as they approached a huge triangular UFO in Puerto Rico.

Huge Triangle shaped UFO in Cabo Rojo makes two U.S. Jet fighters disappear:

The situation continued going on and " in crescendo" until the night in which two U. S. Navy jet fighters were apparently abducted in mid air by a huge triangular shaped UFO and disappeared in front of more than 115 witnesses that have surfaced up to this moment. This event happened in the night of Dec. 28, 1988, at 7:45 P.M.

According to most witnesses, there seemed to be three jet fighters involved with the incident, two of them disappeared in mid air as they intercepted and closed in on the huge triangular UFO, and the third one fled the area flying to the north, being chased by several big red balls of light that came out from the UFO.

After this, the UFO split into two separate triangular objects in a silent flash of light, after which one of the objects or sections flew off very fast to the north and the other one flew to the east, disappearing.

As readers must realize, this incident has profound implications to all of us, and is one of the most important UFO incidents reported in the recent years in Puerto Rico and abroad.

Hi amigo, yes I see that Redfern has gone back to 1949 in your link. And of course there are many much older references to this type of UFO to be found throughout history... witnessed, reported and recorded for posterity , to be duly skirted over or even dismissed because of the reports age and the obvious difficulty in verifying the propriety of the witnesses. .. but even if we are only to go back to the late 40s or let's say Operation Mainbrace's well documented sightings and report from 1952, ... surely this should serve adequately to rule out any type of 'secret air-force vehicle' to any reasonable mind? ... but alas, as you know my friend , with some [if not the majority] of these armchair debunkers ... rationale is a bit of an elusive trait when in full blood debunking mode!

As to the 'Terry Lovelace case' ... yes I had heard about this a while back and to be honest although his credentials would seem to be impressively good [impeccable is often quoted by his publicist] .. I found the story of his sighting at the minuteman facility believable although I couldn't find the answer to my query about what happened to the guy that was supposed to have fallen into the silo ... [but they were called and then just sent away... so I had to make up my own scenario for that] ... but then a fine possibility as it goes? ... and then the main story that took me into 'his world' about the camping trip in which he and his friend [that we hear nothing from ... "Kelly Cahill's husband's silence rings a bell," but even so, not really a lethal aspect!] ... I read and listened [via his many recountings on YT] had that astounding close encounter with the enormous triangular UFO back in the summer of 1977. I found the story riveting and Terry comes across well, a trustworthy and straight-up kind of guy! ... But after a little delving into the man himself, I found that he is actually one of those people that I don't really class as a 'top witness'. ... Firstly, he is one of those people that claim a lifelong association with extraterrestrial visitation since childhood. I do not wish to offend anyone whom believes this to be an actuality, but this claim has always been a red flag in my mind. ... Secondly, besides the book sales and appearance fees from the endless radio and symposium tours that he does, there is also the fact that he claims special knowledge that "there are many species from different worlds or different dimensions here walking among us on Earth today and we don't even recognise them." ... red flag number two!

And then there's the fact that his 'main story' of the lowly hovering UFO lighting up the ground with strongly coloured lights and the 30ft white beam in the centre for the little ET's to re-enter the craft just happened to coincide with Spielberg's masterpiece 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind' which was of course the big film of 1977 [Terry's big year!] ... coincidence number one ... his encounter was at "the devil's den" ... Spielberg's was at "the devil's mountain" ... coincidence number two... both the film and Terry's story ultimately involve 'alien-abduction' ... which takes me to red flag number three... Yes the all-over suntan is interesting because it has featured in many historically believable cases, but then later in the promulgation of Terry's story he claims to have found a spot on his leg that over a period of 35 years that would intermittently go numb on and off over that time, ... and it wasn't until 'after a fall' that he went to the hospital to have an x-ray on the leg, in which to cut a long story short ... "they found some alien implants"? ...

I’ve been a devoted runner for most of my life. I began running in earnest when I left the military in late 1979. I didn’t run marathons, but I was devoted to three or four miles a day. Soon I noticed something odd. At about the two-mile mark in my run a spot on my right leg went completely numb. It was just above my knee and only about an inch in diameter. With a pin I could define its edges as perfectly round. Less than an hour after my run the sensation returned. I mentioned it to my doctor who blew it off and suggested I do the same. I dubbed it my “numb spot” and never gave it a second thought. That was until October 22, 2012 when a fall landed me in an emergency room.
An X-ray of my leg above the knee discovered an anomalous bit of metal. The radiologist was sure it was a manmade object about the size of a fingernail with two wires attached. He pointed out it resembled an “RIFD compute device.” He also noticed a collection of foreign objects below in my calf muscle. He insisted on examining my leg for scar tissue, insisting the only way these objects could become embedded in my leg would have required an incision. He said, “It’s impossible to breach the integrity of the skin without leaving a scar.” There is no scar. I asked, “Doctor, how often do you find a foreign body underneath the skin without a corresponding scar?” He thought for a moment. “Never,” he replied. “I’ve been a radiologist for 23 years and I’ve never seen it before.” He said it was “disturbing.”
A day or two later I made the connection. The foreign object in my knee lay just below my “numb spot.”

... now if this story was indeed genuine, surely 'the implants' in Terry's leg would be removed and authenticated as being 'absolute proof of the ETH wouldn't they?? ... but no, of course we'll just leave them where they are, making Terry's leg go numb!
... Also , as to why the no-show of his 'co-witness-friend' I never got to the bottom of, ... all that I could glean about him before I lost interest was this line that Terry never elaborated on ...

"We became unwilling participants to events that shaped our futures in ways we could never have imagined. It’s caused me four decades of disturbed sleep. It cost my dear friend his life."

... he may have explained somewhere else, but as I say... by this time i'd lost interest and shelved his case alongside the likes of Elizabeth Klarer , Linda Cortile etc.

Has any allegedly alien implants over the years been properly analyzed and tested to see what they're comprised of?...I've heard of some being removed, but never heard anything about any legitimate testing on them...

And yes that has always been a giant blazing red flag for me as pertaining the 'Serial-AA and Implant claim' sub-genre which exploded onto the scene over twenty years ago , and as you may already know ... personally I believe this is a detriment to serious ufology. Mainly because almost without exception the 'claimants' come across as being either desperate for attention or just plain batshit-crazy. ... Oh! I could just be going over the top there and sincerely apologise to anyone that truly believes that they have been genuinely targeted by extraterrestrial entities. [but that doesn't mean that I automatically believe that your own interpretations are correct] ... the thing is that for me personally , if this thing was genuine... the the whole question of the ETH would have been settled years ago. How hard would it be for just one of these [many thousands claimed] repeat abductions to be proven by means of covert personnel and electronic surveillance ? ... And as you say... how hard would it be to have one of these [many thousands claimed] super-tech-implants removed and thoroughly analysed by competent scientists who's word no one could dispute? .... Well on that we have several differing answers... there is the answer of the genre pushers such as John E Mack, Derrel Sims etc that claim to have irrefutable proof in their possession ... until they are examined and are dismissed as being natural organic body detritus by biologists, and then claim cover-ups or that the alien technology is too smart to detect!
...And then there have been several cases that i've seen in which genuine professional scientific investigators have actually given the claim a open-minded chance, such as this one from Dr. Susan Blackmore [psychologist of 50 years experience and also a leading out of the body experience expert] ... it concerns 'a claimed' alien implant that a one time prominent AA-claimant 'James Basil' said that he had removed himself shortly after it was put in by his weekly-visitors...

And there's plenty more examples of this kind of real analysis that habitually turn out to be prosaic natural objects only for the claimant , his representative or often ..media-presenter to cry foul and cover-up, ... but then continue to claim that they had a alien implant removed at their future [paydays ] ..erm, I mean UFO symposium .

Don't know if you already knew about this 'Pretty unusual case' here from Philip Mantle's latest upcoming book [UFO Landings UK] and [half finished] Amazon Prime documentary ... it concerns a sighting by Phil Shepherdson, a 70 year old man that hails from the village of Woodthorpe in North Yorkshire, and says his ‘petrifying’ experience happened in February 1979 when he was driving his scooter along a country lane near Crayke, Easingwold. ... I say unusual because i've never heard a report in which 'the occupants' were trying to physically push the craft out of view! [or were they bump-starting it. lol] ...
