. . . if I might add, Greta Thunberg should welcome war in Ukraine because reduction in use of fossil fuels should help reduce global warming.

Germany criticises Ukraine's request for cluster munitions and phosphorus bombs

Anton Hofreiter, Green faction member of the German Bundestag, has criticised Ukraine’s request for cluster munitions and phosphorus bombs.

Details: "Ukraine is asking for everything. I think this request is not right," said Hofreiter, who is the chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the German Bundestag. When asked if that was where Ukraine’s allies had to draw a line, he agreed.

Hofreiter said that he believes it was an "unreasonable request" born out of desperation.

"Because what was promised has not been fully realised; Leopard 2 [tanks] are a good example of that," he noted. Germany, Poland and Portugal promised to give Ukraine Leopard 2 main battle tanks, but German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s promise to supply enough tanks for two battalions cannot currently be fulfilled because many countries that initially supported supplying tanks to Ukraine have since held back.

During the Munich Security Conference, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov has called for Ukraine’s allies to supply cluster munitions and phosphorus bombs. Using either type of munitions is controversial and cluster munitions are banned by international law.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said during the Munich Security Conference on Saturday that if Ukraine is given cluster munitions, its Armed Forces will only deploy those munitions against the Russian army.

"We have evidence that the Russian Federation is using cluster munitions. We understand that [the use of] these munitions is a controversial issue, globally. We are not party to the convention that prohibits the use of cluster munitions. So there are no legal obstacles. And if we obtain those munitions, they will be used exclusively against the Russian military forces," Kuleba said.

Russia deploys nuclear-armed ships for first time in 30 years, report says

According to Norwegian intelligence services, Moscow has fitted its Northern Fleet with tactical nuclear weapons, increasing the risk of an escalation due to misunderstandings between Moscow and NATO

The risk of a nuclear escalation on Russia’s borders with NATO countries continues to rise. With its army worn down by the offensive in Ukraine, Moscow has withdrawn troops from the area and replaced them with tactical nuclear weapons on its Northern Fleet ships for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to Norwegian military intelligence.

Oslo fears that the presence of these warheads poses “a particularly serious threat in various scenarios that may involve countries of the Atlantic Alliance,” since mutual mistrust “has raised the possibility of unwanted events and misunderstandings between Russia and NATO.”

The Norwegian Defense Ministry’s annual report, Fokus 2023, confirms that a central part of Russia’s nuclear capability has been deployed on the surface ships and submarines of the Northern Fleet. According to the Norwegian media, the last time that warships armed with nuclear weapons departed from the Arctic port of Severomorsk was back in the golden age of the Russian navy, during the Cold War.

“With a weakened conventional capability, the importance of nuclear weapons has increased significantly for Russia,” the report says, adding that Moscow can also count on other types of warfare through anti-satellite weapons, cyber tools and its special forces for sabotaging submarine infrastructure.

The report warns that nobody should rule out the possibility that “a local war could turn into a larger conflict” directly involving Russia, the US and NATO. According to this information, Russia had planned the complete occupation of Ukraine and its ambition was to seize as much intact infrastructure as possible.

Russian authorities have repeatedly warned about the possibility of nuclear war if their other plans fail. President Vladimir Putin warned in September 2022 that he would defend the annexed territory “with all means” at his disposal, and the deputy head of the Security Council and ex-president, Dmitry Medvedev, stated in early January that “the defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war can lead to the outbreak of a nuclear war.”

Scary. In light of that statement though part of the fear comes from mismanagement and old equipment not direct aggressive use.

By all means, let's just support Ukraine and all the illegals flowing across our borders while talking about the poor state Social Security and Medicare that we've spent our working lives contributing to pissed away.

It is quite amusing to me that many of those who are calling for western backing of Ukraine in this war are often the types who have derided western defence procurement spending and sought for decades to minimize it. Now all of a sudden they want massive military expenditure, to assist a foreign, non-allied country. They have sought to undermine arms manufacturers and defence companies by labelling them as 'unethical' and pressuring pension funds and others to divest from them. Now, they are clamouring for their products.
In today's Telegraph:

The liberal establishment wants western arms manufacturers abolished. The liberal establishment wants western arms for Ukraine. Do you follow?

I don't think its Liberals in the West who are against wars.

At least, as far as US goes, it seems that non-Liberals, aka. Republicans ( or Populists ) are the ones who don't want to have anything to do with wars. I would say that Republicans are "stay at home and mind your own business" party, while Democrats are "lets help our bankers make money all over the globe ( while faking a spread of democracy :) )".

Liberals on both sides of the Atlantic are enthusiasts for war, that is correct. This is what I was saying. However, they are simultaneously demonizing arms manufacturers, while relying on the products of the industry for the waging of their wars. i.e. There is a patent cognitive dissonance. They cannot decide clearly whether they want arms manufacturers to exist to help them conquer the world, or if they want to get rid of them because arms manufacturing is 'unethical'.

Yeah, you are right "cognitive dissonance".

I'm just pro-science.
Arms manufacturers are first adopters for practically all of science. Without them less money would flow into science, because science would have much fewer customers.
War is simply monkey-business and it can't be removed from our genes.
We'll kill each other and be hypocritical about it till the end of the time.

'If we destroy Biden who will replace him? Kamala Harris?' Russia's propagandists discuss why Kremlin LET Biden visit Kyiv 'with guarantees' because for them he's a better option than VP Harris who has 'no restraints or opinion'

Russian propagandists said President Joe Biden was only allowed to visit Ukraine without threat from Moscow because in their mind, 'destroying' him would lead to a worse situation if Vice President Kamala Harris took power.

Television personalities for Russian State TV warned that Harris is more dangerous than Biden because 'she has no opinion' and would listen to advice from Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Pundits for Putin appeared to get into a heated discussion on state media when a woman appearing to be moderating the discussion said Russia should not have allowed Biden to visit without threat of retaliation.

It comes after Biden made an unannounced stop in the war-torn eastern European country Monday morning before flying to Poland to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion into Ukraine.

The White House revealed it warned the Kremlin before Biden made his surprise trip to Kyiv Monday.

Biden vows to 'defend literally every inch of NATO' territory: 'Article 5 is a sacred commitment'

President Biden addressed the group of European nations known as the Bucharest Nine on Wednesday, stressing the need to stand up to Russian aggression and emphasizing the United States' commitment to NATO allies.

Biden's appearance at the Bucharest Nine meeting in Warsaw came as part of a European tour that saw the president stop in Ukraine and meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before heading to Poland. The trip is taking place nearly one year to the day after Russia invaded Ukraine, kicking off a war that continues to rage on.

The U.S Government blatantly lied about Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, so why do people think they are telling the truth about Ukraine?...

Article 5 is not a sacred commitment, nor any kind of commitment at all. There are many get-out clauses to coming to NATO members' aid within Article 5 and within the treaty as a whole. The text of the article:

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security .
These get-outs were necessary for the treaty to pass through the US Congress.
