Similar characteristics does not mean they can not travel faster than light. Are you not familiar with the idea of folding space or wormholes? Shortcuts through space?
Seems to me that if they can open up portals through space/time to go to and fro from other universes they could easily do the very same in the same universe to negate the need for FTL travel. It might also prove to be a whole lot quicker.

Is it?
Science is already talking about it and have been for a few decades. So is it that much of a leap to suggest a species that can travel universes can also do so over great distances in the same universe.
There is another possibility too. Since time and space differs from one universe to another one could universe jumping in and out to traverse millions or billions of light years in another. In simpler understanding, ten thousand miles in our universe may equal 10 light years in another(as an example). So one could enter our universe travel 10,000 miles in the proper direction then phase back to find themselves 10 light years from where they were. By using farther out universes the distances travelled could become geometrically greater and greater.
