Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vows 'harsh response' for 'evil and criminal enemies' after remotely detonated bombs killed nearly 100 and injured scores more during cemetery gathering to mark anniversary of spymaster Soleimani's assassination

(Excerpt)

Nearly 100 people were killed and more than 200 wounded after two blasts rocked a ceremony that was being held to mark the 2020 assassination of Iran's top commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone attack.

The first explosion was quickly followed by a second close to a cemetery in the southeastern city of Kerman where thousands had gathered to mark the four-year anniversary of Soleimani's killing.

Harrowing video showed scores of bloodied victims lying on the floor as others stumbled away from the blast scene close to the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque where Soleimani is buried, in what Iran has described as a 'terrorist attack'.

'The evil and criminal enemies of the Iranian nation once again created a disaster and martyred a large number of dear people in Kerman,' Khamenei said in a statement. 'This disaster will have a harsh response, God willing.' He did not name a suspect, nor has any group yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosions came a day after an apparent Israeli drone strike killed Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in Lebanon's capital Beirut, escalating fears that a wider regional war could erupt with Hamas and Lebanese terror group Hezbollah vowing to retaliate.

But there is no suggestion that Tuesday's attack was authored by Tel-Aviv, and its chief ally the United States has tonight said it has 'no reason' to believe Israel was behind it. The US state department added that it would be 'ridiculous' to suggest Washington was involved.

While Israel has carried out attacks in Iran over its nuclear programme, it has conducted targeted assassinations, not mass-casualty bombings. Sunni extremist groups, including Islamic State, have carried out large-scale attacks in the past that killed civilians in Shiite-majority Iran, though not in relatively peaceful Kerman.

ISIS claims responsibility for Iran cemetery bloodbath that left nearly 100 dead

ISIS today claimed responsibility for two explosions that killed nearly 100 people and wounded scores more at a ceremony in Iran to commemorate commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by a US drone in 2020.

Two explosions tore through the southeastern city of Kerman yesterday where thousands had gathered to mark the four-year anniversary of Soleimani's killing.

Harrowing video showed scores of bloodied victims lying on the floor as others stumbled away from the blast scene close to the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque where Soleimani is buried in what Iran described as a 'terrorist attack'.

Now, ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack that left 84 people dead and 284 wounded, saying that two of their terrorists detonated their explosive vests in the middle of a crowd.

Tehran earlier blamed the explosions on 'terrorists' and vowed revenge for the bloodiest such attacks since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

'A very strong retaliation will be meted out to them by the hands of the soldiers of Soleimani,' Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber told reporters in Kerman.

US and UK launch major bombardment on Yemen: Fighter jets, Navy destroyers and submarines rain missiles down on Houthi strongholds - American bases in Iraq 'are hit by retaliatory strikes'

US and UK launch major bombardment on Yemen: Fighter jets, Navy destroyers and submarines

Airstrikes have begun on multiple targets inside Yemen as US and UK military forces unleash missiles from planes, destroyers and submarines on the Houthi. The attacks come in response to weeks of Houthi led bombings on ships in the Red Sea - amid the conflict between Israel and Gaza. US officials had warned there would be 'consequences' for the Houthi's attack on non-military ships. That answer came Thursday night when explosions were reported in Sana'a, Hodeidah governorate, Saada, and Dhamar, Houthi officials confirmed. US and British authorities are said to be targeting multiple locations using fighter jets and navy destroyers. Submarines and tomahawk cruise missiles were also being used by US and UK military.

The descent into World War 3: How Russia, Iran and China are simultaneously making moves that will drag us all into conflict

The descent into World War 3: How Russia, Iran and China are simultaneously making moves

Not three weeks of 2024 have passed, and the governments of Estonia, Sweden and now the UK have already warned their respective nations that the prospect of large-scale war is on the horizon. Leaked German intelligence documents suggest Berlin expects Russia to launch another wave of attacks to overwhelm Ukraine, and is scrambling to come up with contingency plans in the event Russian troops march westward from Belarus. The Israel-Hamas conflict threatens to spread violence across the Middle East, with Iran 's so-called 'Axis of Resistance' - including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi rebels - increasing their attacks on Israel and commercial shipping routes, prompting the UK and US to launch a series of devastating strikes by air and sea. Further East, Taiwan's election of a new democracy-loving president has angered Beijing even further, with a Chinese invasion of the island nation in the coming years looking ever more likely. And all the while, Kim Jong Un stands by with his fist clenching the keys to North Korea 's nuclear arsenal, ready to plunge his foes into radioactive winter.

Xi Jinping 'is purging China's military and bringing in generals willing to go to war in move that could lead to Taiwan invasion and drag US into WW3'

China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its territory, and fears have grown in recent years that Xi is planning an invasion in the coming years, in the face of increasingly hostile rhetoric and simulated blockades of the island. Beijing has never renounced the use of force to take what it views as a renegade province, and Xi has said that unification is inevitable. But Beijing has also been involved in low-level clashes with India along their shared border, as well as disputes over nearby islands with Japan and the Philippines.

Middle East tinderbox threatens to explode as Pakistan air force launches airstrikes on Iran at 'militant targets' it says are behind missiles that killed two children

Pakistan's air force has launched retaliatory airstrikes on two alleged militant positions in Iran, days after an Iranian airstrike killed two children in the country.

The air attacks in Sistan and Baluchestan province Thursday killed at least seven - and threaten to further enflame tensions between the two nations.

The strikes also imperil already dodgy diplomatic relations between the neighbors, as Iran and nuclear-armed Pakistan have long regarded each other with suspicion.

They also raise the threat of a full-blown war breaking out in a Middle East - already plagued by Israel's now months-long conflict with Hamas.

Iraq, meanwhile, has recalled its ambassador from Iran for consultations, after Iran admitted to carrying out the missile and drone operation in the Baluchistan province in Western Pakistan Tuesday.

Houthis say Russian and Chinese ships are free to pass through the Red Sea without being fired upon - and blast US and UK for 'playing against themselves' by carrying out strikes in Yemen

Senior political adviser and Houthi spokesman Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said his rebels were waging an 'ethical' war, adding the attacks on merchant vessels would only cease when Israel stops all military operations in Gaza. 'The madness and idiocy of the USA and Great Britain have played against themselves - now their ships will not be able to use one of the key trade arteries in the world. The US and UK will need to stop aggression against Yemen, stop the war in the Gaza Strip and ensure the uninterrupted flow of medicine, fuel and food - only then will we immediately stop all our operations in the Red Sea,' he told Russian outlet Izvestia.

Three US soldiers are killed and 25 are wounded in drone strike on Jordan outpost in major escalation by Iran-backed terrorists

Three American soldiers have been killed in suicide drone strike on a US base in Jordan, US Central Command (CENTCOM) have confirmed. The drone attack late Saturday impacted a base in the northeast part of the country near the Syria border, and resulted in at least 25 other injuries.

As of Sunday morning, Iran - the main backer of anti-Israel group Hezbollah - and its proxies are the main suspects. Meanwhile, conflict in the wartorn region continues to escalate, with the war in Gaza still ongoing, and Iran currently exchanging airstrikes with US ally Pakistan.

The US on Sunday issued a statement mourning the loss of the as of now unnamed servicemembers - only the latest casualty as the unrest in the Middle East threatens to explode.

'Today, America’s heart is heavy,' wrote President Joe Biden Sunday morning from the White House, before confirming the strike on the small US outpost known as Tower 42 had been successful.

'Last night, three U.S. service members were killed—and many wounded—during an unmanned aerial drone attack on our forces stationed in northeast Jordan near the Syria border.

'While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,' the commander-in-chief continued.

'Jill and I join the families and friends of our fallen—and Americans across the country—in grieving the loss of these warriors in this despicable and wholly unjust attack.

'These service members embodied the very best of our nation: Unwavering in their bravery. Unflinching in their duty. Unbending in their commitment to our country— risking their own safety for the safety of their fellow Americans, and our allies and partners with whom we stand in the fight against terrorism.
