Did my first gig as a 1099 contractor yesterday - just picking at some low hanging fruit in my area. Totally familiar to walk into a place with my gear, get let in to the 'authorized personnel only' area to do whatever and then leave. Done that more times than I can even begin to calculate.

But then I just jumped in my own truck and went home. That part was kind of surreal - not being wrapped in the loving embrace of a large company.

49-18.. Memorial season came to a close last night.
Brian lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. The whole team was demoralized. After I made reservations for two at Prime quarters. gave Debbie $50.00 and told them to have fun and be back at 11PM. Brian asked "your not coming?" I said "I already ate."
He smiled "Thanks Mr W! 11 no later!"

Is this a regular career change, or are you semi-retired?

Semi-retired and have no need to return to the soul crushing power commute and endless stress scene, but I have more free time on my hands than I ever have had as an adult and am getting a little wiggy from it.

I work 20-25 hours a week locally doing nothing exciting and recently found a service that I can browse through like a buffet and grab whatever few IT/Telecom morsels that seem appealing.

So I worked through yesterday and about 5 hours this morning on some side work for a customer in the big city of Charlotte, writing three CNC programs for his Biesse Rover CNC router...I wrote them on my laptop and remote connected to his machinery and downloaded the finished programs into it so they have it Monday morning...About 14 hours work off and on for 600 dollars I'll see in my paypal account by Wednesday, not a bad deal for weekend work, which I try not to take on but he was in a tight spot and needed these programs in a hurry...

I use this soap for showering and washing my hair, only recently I've started using it for cleaning the kitchen counters and washed my dog using it...This is a wonderful soap IMO...

It's already snowed a couple of times and it's going to be a long cold several months. Dunno what anyone else does to pass the time - not all of us deal with winter I suppose.

Trying to come up with a project to keep me occupied. Last winter was rebuilding Corvette suspension. I am starting to think maybe this year's gonna be something cool and even less useful - a TOS Captain's chair.

chair-tos-jpg.737058

Some plans out there, none complete. I think I found the basic measurements and might mock something up with cardboard. Frustratingly I once had one of the the very Madison chairs the original was made from - long since sent to the landfill.

Lots of people have made these things and this is hardly an original idea but I figured what the hell, why not? May not even do it .... I mean, what am I going to do, sit in the basement and tell my cat stuff like "we'll pivot at warp two and bring our forward tubes to bear" ? On the other hand, Louie is a TOS fan and he might need a science station.

Incidentally, Scotty was my favorite character and I loved it when he was in charge. If he tells you he'll blow up the ship and take you with him or that General Order 24 starts in one hour pretty sure he means it.

We don't always get snow every winter, ice storms sometimes, but it can get bitterly cold in my part of NC, I was just thinking about this the other day...We've dropped below freezing too early and too many times already this winter, seems the long night (no pun intended lol) is upon us, what to do on those bitter cold days...

I have a friend who does a lot of paper craft models, tedious work depending on the scale printed, its a lot of cutting, folding, and gluing, he does these Gundam models and Transformers...All meticulously folded cardstock paper, some parts are very small, he uses magnified glasses to see closer lol...

I think your friend has the right of it - portable hobby. Once I laid it out I realized the chair will be pretty big and kind of heavy and will be something that looks cool 5% of the time and is a nuisance the other 95%. Might even have the ship in a bottle 'measure-your-door-first' problem.

Have to stick to turning wrenches to avoid death by boredom I guess.

While shopping at the used book store I always check their old time radio section for any shadow recordings.
to my delight I found "the cinnamon bear." a show I listened to as a boy.
now my kids can discover this gem. .
I almost cried when I found it.

Had a day of madness at work, one large CNC machine wire track got hung up while the operator was using it and ripped the track completely apart along with some of the wiring halting at process, it wasn't fully repaired yet, Monday I'll be rewiring that machine...Another CNC compressed air control unit failed and it wouldn't release the tooling halting that process until it got repaired....A automated saw lost its 22 inch blade while it was cutting, throwing the spindle nut into the machine and fortunately when the blade flew off it went down instead of up, ripping all the carbide off when it slammed into the lower housing stopping that line until it was repaired...A small transmission on a lamination machine blew out its lower seal stopping that line, fortunately it was not damaged but needed immediate repairs...

My plan today at work was to start building an automated material spreader I designed that will spread the materials by 2 inches as each panel goes into a boring machine matching spacing the panels to keep better in time with the outfield processes...So much for that plan given the production failures we experienced...
