Some anon on UFO Trail found Gene in the audience of this Apple keynote from 2001 which puts him around 55. My first thought was that he has aged remarkably — even from the last known pictures of him (using first gen iPhone) where he looks about 15 years younger. Those were probably 5-6 years after this video was shot.

Here is the link to the video (1:18 for Gene) but I've also included a screenshot of the video and Gene circa 2007 for reference.

That really does seem like marked change. I mean, aging will catch up with every one of us, no doubt. No shame in that. Granted the image quality is much sharper, too. But still. And the hair, what went on with the hair? Looks totally different. I believe both images are the same guy however.

That kind of accelerated ageing suggests extreme metabolic stress on the body.

Drugs - particularly stimulants would do it - they literally age you by accelerating your metabolism for extended periods. Alcohol would be another possibility due to its inherent toxicity and the fact that heavy drinking goes hand in hand with various nutritional deficiencies which mimic some of the problems of accelerated ageing. Add an extra problem in like gambling or any similar additional stress and that would certainly explain it.

How do you explain those beady eyes??

I take it then the motel didn't toss them out by the ears because Gene miraculously came up with the funds courtesy of that tax free ss check ?

I lean towards this explanation: Steinberg has the cash for rent stashed aside. He just pushes the rental agent right up to the last second before he pays the rent. It’s either a game to him or he tries to hang onto his cash for as long as he can (he doesn’t like to pay anyone).

I think he derives some strange pleasure from playing "chicken" with not paying or pushing the payment to be as late as possible.

what I can't understand is why with 2800 in S.S. gene did not pay desert mirage a penny. if he had the money coming then why not pay the rent? one post on trail hints at 420 use.
gambling? pot? drugs?
who knows.

I think the same. Or perhaps he thinks it's smart or somehow the correct financial management behavior to put off any bill payments so long as you possibly can.

Like, the due date is just a suggestion - for suckers really. You don't HAVE to pay then.

Only my theory but I feel like he pulled that with the Desert Mirage and they didn't play around and booted him.

I don't think that SS income for the Steinbergs is $2800/month. Erickson posted it somewhere, from the bankruptcy filing, but I thought it was more like $2000 from SS and $700 from the Paracast. We could look at the bankruptcy filing to confirm.

I can't imagine how much weed he'd have to be smoking to have it make a real dent in his income. Then again it would take a lot to make someone think the Paracast was going to solve all their financial problems, too.

Weed would certainly explain why he constantly thinks that his bullshit schemes will work. I have encountered people who consume it all day and come up with crazy schemes which never ever go anywhere.

The bankruptcy documents are interesting. I skimmed them when they were first linked at Jack Brewer's blog, and had a couple of Holy Fucking Shit moments, like the $55k he borrowed from some local guy and flaked on. Part of the $97k total that was erased when the bankruptcy went through. The $678 car payment, and another $600 or so in car related expenses.

Gene gets, according to the docs, $1233 every month from Social Security. Barbara gets another $520, for a total of $1753. That seems about right, based on what some of my relatives get and the *ahem* work history of those two. Gene claimed a bit more than $1000 from the "radio shows" and web sites, for a total of $2800 per month, not counting the panhandling income. I doubt the $1000 from ads and subs is quite legit (for 2016), but the SS numbers would be very easy for the court to verify. So he does not get $2800 from Social Security. He gets $1753.

I'm sure ad and sub revenue is way down, so I have no doubt he really is in a tough spot. If the car-related numbers were anywhere near real, then his damned car eats up his whole SS check and then some. Get rid of the stupid car, Gene, and if you must have a car for self-esteem reasons or moving from hotel to motel, or to live in, then get something you can afford. $5000 will get you a really nice, well kept car just about anywhere if you are a competent shopper. Even with that train wreck of a credit history, you could get something Uber approved for much, much less than you are paying now.

His mess is of course the product of many years of bad decisions, so I don't expect him to get his act together. Ever. Two thousand a month is enough to live on if you are careful and responsible. A part time job, say $500 a month, would make a big difference. As I have said many times, I know people raising kids on $2500 per month after taxes. Hell, I have neighbors doing that, and I live in a little mountain town with high rents.

Anyway, here's a link. You too can follow the info there and find the Paracast apparently based in a $300k home up halfway to Flagstaff and other goodies. Maybe that's where Sis lives, in a place her husband swindled someone out of, who knows?

Spot on. $2000 isn't much these days but some people have to raise families on similar amounts. Gene and Barbara are two elderly people with a little dog. It should be a lot easier for them.

If Gene simply got rid of his car and stopped eating out it would make a massive difference. Add in a real job too (albeit part time) and he would have more disposable income than most working families have. Yet Gene has never deemed it necessary to take these simple steps. It has been suggested many times.

Gene just gets angry and defensive and then carries on as usual. God forbid someone raises it on the forum.

I gave up my car when I couldn't justify the expense. Didn't even need to think about. Sure it was not convenient and it didn't look good but I had no choice. I also wasn't going out and eating for every meal.

Indeed, even though I have my finances in order now, I couldn't afford to eat out for every meal and I'm lucky if I eat out say once every couple of months - when I was having difficulty even that wouldn't have been possible for me.

Yet Gene always thinks he has a choice in these matters and by choice I mean that he believes he can spend carelessly no matter what the situation.

That simply confirms to me that he has never actually hit rock bottom (at least not by his definition). To some extent he must like the way things are now or he would simply make those changes.

1706 s 78th place Mesa Az.
he listed this as his address in may 2016
in Aug Sept according to the report on UFO trial he was out by Sept 2016
all public records..

He didn't claim he had a pet when filed Chapter 7. That means Teddy Bear was aquired post bankruptcy. That means next to nothing but I still found it interesting. The most telling was the HUGE loan he took from "JAMES M TORSON" and the endless quick cash loans.

I found who I believe to be the same Jim Torson from Flagstaff on Facebook. From what I can tell he seems like a good dude (good photographer) who has an interest in the unknown. Poor guy fell for the grift in a big way.

I'm pretty sure he claimed not to own any domain names or things of that sort. I'm not familiar with bankruptcy documents or any court documents at all, really, so I'm not sure what to make of some of it. There were several things that didn't add up, as far as I could tell. The address of the Paracast may have been the one recorded on state documents or something, maybe where the Steinbergs lived at the time the LLC was set up. The LLC has lapsed, so putting the old address in may have made some sense. Anyway, that place is in a town between Phoenix and Flagstaff, and is something like 2,000 square feet and valued around $300k.

The infamous Kia was bought new while Gene was panhandling online. Reposessed about a year later. He then apparently went right out and bought a new VW. I'm sure he's paying monstrous interest and the car probably has a GPS tracker on it! He had to have been contemplating bankruptcy at the time he bought the VW. It takes some time for financial problems to grow to that magnitude. All in all, the docs paint a disturbing picture of bad judgment and general cluelessness about reality. But we knew that about him.

The Torson line in that bankruptcy is morbidly fascinating to me. The fellow one can find online who appears to be James Torson, he appears to be a smart and nice fellow. Presumably he got suckered big time but, who knows exactly what happened there, apart from the principals. I'm confident whatever the truth was it is in no way flattering to our boy Gene, and certainly not a case for loaning him money.

I have never had the nerve to contact him to ask for more info. I am not a blogger or amateur journalist or what have you, merely nosy. If some no account burned me to the tune of $44K, I don't think I'd care to talk about it. Even if the story was that I was hoping to do an apparently desperate man a big favor. One has to wonder what happened to so much cash, and if it slowed down Gene's begging back then at all. To me it's certain evidence that giving him money now won't help anything.

I agree although he may appreciate having an outlet to vent on here. I only wasted a few hundred dollars on Schemey. If I'd lost $44k I think I would be going out of my mind with rage.

This is why I don't understand people who keep making excuses for Gene or trying to sympathise with him. This guy has real victims. He moves into numerous homes with no intention of ever paying. He takes out loans with no intention of paying back. He "borrows" money from strangers as emergency loans and does exactly the same. He even screws his own family members (like wrecking his son's credit history). This is not a good guy who deserves our sympathy.

He is a criminal pure and simple. Just because the legal system doesn't seem to care does not make it OK.

Apparently he was not happy. As I posted not too long ago, Torson sued Gene and took steps to collect the judgment. It makes the bankruptcy description of a personal loan all the more interesting.
